We are proud to announce the completion of our Fourth Annual Native Plant Workgroup in person training!

Yearly our department hosts a training for tribes across California who are interested in starting their own native plant nurseries. During this three day training we cover topics related to native plants, nursery production and restoration. Other topics covered include seed saving/collecting, propagation, composting, plant maintenance, and planning for restoration projects.

This training was held July 22-24, and included over 30 participants from different tribes! Photos taken on day two of the training at one of our Restoration Sites. We took the group up to perform restoration work and to talk about our ancestral sites. Thank you all for participating!

Our lands are sacred. The land is our mother, and the rivers are the blood. When mother earth gets sick, we get sick. Take care of the land and natures peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into the oak trees. Feel the winds blow their freshness onto you and thank Mother Earth for providing for us.

Last week our department teamed up with Dan Mosley, who has worked at the Pyramid Lake Fisheries for 23 years as a ranger, fisheries biologist, and a water quality specialist to observe different benthic macro invertebrates.

Observing these invertebrates allows our department to assess the health of our aquatic ecosystems because they are highly sensitive to environmental changes. By monitoring their abundance and diversity, we are able to gauge the overall conditions of our waterbodies, detect pollution, and identify changes due to chemical, physical, and biological disturbances.

The Environmental Department has been working with Wakamatsu Farm to help create an intertribal space for tending and gathering Native plants for food, medicine, and basketry materials.

Last Friday our department, Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK), and the Language Department preformed an invasive species removal as well as planted 45 Mugworts also known as Munmún in Nisenan and a couple Elderberry plants also known as K’ak’ in Nisenan.

Attention! It is RATTLESNAKE season! This photo was taken at Indian Creek Ranch. Please use caution when visiting.

Rattlesnakes also known as Koymóo in Nisenan are not aggressive, but will strike to defend themselves if disturbed. Please give them distance and respect. They are important members of our community as they help keep rodent and other small animal populations under control. Please stay on the designated paths and be alert where you place your hands and feet.

Tribal Members please contact our Tribal Fire Department if you encounter a rattlesnake also known as Wákkaali in Northern Sierra Miwok and would like them to relocate it.

Thank you all for participating in our Annual Earth Day! We had approximately 200 Tribal Members and staff attend this fun event. We believe this was our biggest event yet, and we cannot wait for next years Earth Day! We hope you enjoyed the activities, food, and prizes.
