For many students, the new 2026-2027 school year starts tomorrow!

Here are some helpful back-to-school safety tips:

• Slow down in school zones and obey the posted speed limits.
• Stop for school buses when the stop arm is extended and the red lights are flashing.
• Stay alert and avoid distractions while driving.
• Watch carefully for children crossing streets, walking on sidewalks, and riding bicycles.
• Leave a little earlier and be patient. Traffic will be heavier during the first few days of school.

Drivers, please be observant to school zones and increased pedestrian traffic in your area.

Our NPD Traffic Enforcement Unit will be increasing patrol activity around our schools this week, so please drive safely.

Let’s all stay safe and have a great start to the new school year!

NPD K9 Orcan Retires After Five Years of Dedicated Service

After five years of loyal and distinguished service, K9 Orcan has officially retired from the Navajo Police Department in July 2026.

A dual-purpose German Shepherd imported from Germany, K9 Orcan joined the NPD Specialty Unit K9 team in June 2021 alongside his handler, Officer Kyle Simms. Born on June 3, Orcan served with distinction as a patrol K9 specializing in narcotic detection. Together with Officer Simms, he conducted roadside operations, performed school searches, and participated in numerous community outreach events. Throughout his career, he worked alongside his K9 partners Xensi, Gecko, and Raica.

Officer Simms and Orcan successfully graduated from the Adlerhorst Police Dog Handling School in California in June 2021, beginning a strong partnership built on trust, mutual respect, and dedication.

Now in retirement, Orcan is enjoying a well-earned rest surrounded by his favorite toys his beloved squeaky tennis ball and his cherished red Kong chew toy, which Officer Simms affectionately calls “kind of like his teddy bear.” His favorite snack remains cheese, prompting Officer Simms to joke that Orcan is now “working to become one of the top national cheese inspectors on the Navajo Nation.”

Reflecting on their time together, Officer Simms offered heartfelt advice to aspiring K9 handlers:
“Work well with your K9 partner and get to understand them in-depth. That will go a long way in the field. You’ll have long days, but don’t give up. It’s a good feeling to know you are never alone out on traffic calls with your backup partner keeping his or her eyes and ears out for you. Understand the do’s and don’ts with your K9 we all have our limits. Don’t get discouraged.”

K9 Orcan’s service, courage, and unwavering loyalty have left a lasting impact on the Navajo Police Department and the community he helped protect.

Congratulations on your well-deserved retirement, K9 Orcan. Thank you for your faithful service and for being a true hero with four paws. You will be deeply missed. 🐾
