🏈 He walked these halls. Now he's inspiring the next generation of Chieftains.

Shiprock High School alum Shiyazh Pete came home this week to fire up students and student-athletes at a fall pep rally β€” and the energy in that gym said it all. Pete graduated from SHS in 2021, went on to play college football at New Mexico State and the University of Kentucky, and signed and trained with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent.

But the message he brought back wasn't about football stats. "You don't have to be the most talented or the strongest," Pete told the crowd. "I surrounded myself with people who had great perseverance β€” people who just kept showing up and put in the work, even when they were tired. That's the one thing that really stands out."

Fall sports are officially underway β€” come support your Chieftains this week!

Eagle Peak Career Academy officially welcomed its community today with a traditional blessing and ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the school’s grand opening.

The event, themed β€œA New Journey,” began at 8 a.m. with the blessing and ribbon-cutting, followed by remarks from stakeholder speakers representing the surrounding community, and closed with refreshments for attendees and T-shirt making.

Students, staff, elders, district leadership, and community members β€” including local royalty title holders β€” gathered outside the new campus to celebrate the milestone. Principal Brian Paniagua and students, including senior Emily Caboni, spoke to the significance of the new school and what it means for the community.

In this week's Superintendent Address, Superintendent Steve Carlson provides an update on the Newcomb Elementary gymnasium following storm damage last month and explains how the district plans long-term facility investment through the New Mexico Public School Facilities Authority. The Superintendent also shares information on the district's website transition to centralschools.org, the launch of ParentSquare as the new two-way communication platform between teachers and parents, and this year's cut to state transportation funding and how consistent bus ridership helps the district recover it.

The address closes with an invitation to the Eagle Peak Career Academy School Blessing and Ribbon Cutting on Saturday, August 29th, and a reminder to support Central Consolidated student-athletes at this week's fall sporting events. For more district news, visit centralschools.org.

Please welcome Leah R. Alfonso as the new Enrichment Coach for Gifted Education, a role in which she will support gifted identification, programming and services for CCSD students across the district.

Alfonso brings 27 years of experience in education, including 10 years as a science teacher at Shiprock High School, where she taught Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors courses and served as science department head for seven years. Earlier in her career, she taught multiple science disciplines at the high school level in the Philippines, where she was involved in planning, coaching and outreach programs and trained as a leader in her country.

Alfonso holds a Master's degree in Science Teaching from New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and is currently pursuing a doctoral degree at Liberty University.

"I've seen firsthand what students can achieve with the right support. I'm excited to bring that experience to this new role," Alfonso said.

In her new role, Alfonso will serve as an advocate for gifted students and the Gifted Education Program, oversee district-wide identification of gifted students, and provide training and support to staff, administrators and families on gifted education topics.
