This isn’t about a problem that is imminent, or even certain to happen in the longer term. It is about ensuring people who live in areas that could be affected have this risk in their mind and are keeping attentive to conditions.

It has been MANY years since we have needed to be concerned about ice jamming on the Schuylkill. Current conditions have changed that. There is heavy ice on the river through the whole county. If we have a slow warm up, things will hopefully correct themselves without issues. However, a rapid thaw, or a thaw with significant rain, could create serious flooding issues in low lying areas along the river.

Unlike summer/spring floods where creeks and streams rise fast but we generally have some decent advance warning about river crests being reached, flooding from ice jamming can happen very quickly. A sudden warming melting the snowpack can create rising water levels that break up the ice, and then the ice forms a physical obstruction, especially at places in the river with hard curves or narrowing. Water levels behind the ice jam can rise extremely fast. Then, when the ice eventually breaks free, it allows this flood surge to move downstream where another area of sudden flooding can occur.

If you live along the river, please keep tuned into this risk, and think about the same kind of preparations you would be putting in place if this were June and a tropical system was headed our way.

NOTE - picture for effect, not actually the Schuylkill River.

As we prepare for the impending snow, please remember to keep the roadways and the shoulders clear of vehicles, campers, etc. Attached is a list of roads affected by our Snow Emergency Parking Ordinance. Also, please keep EMS services in mind and clear a 3ft radius around any fire hydrant on your property. We appreciate your help in this matter as we try to keep the roadways open and safe.
