Over the last 12 months, M has been able to rewrite her story. She has settled into a new home, one where ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฒ๐๐ผ ๐ถ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐น๐ฒ ๐๐ผ ๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐น๐ผ๐ผ๐ธ ๐ฎ ๐ฑ๐ผ๐ด ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ธ, and where she has been able to build a strong and loving community. When we asked what other organizations she has found particularly helpful she shared: Imagine Housing, Hopelink, Lake Washington United Methodist Church, Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Seattle/King County, and Vehicle Resident Outreach (VRO) University Heights Center.
M spoke about how challenging homelessness had been, to be in a set of circumstances she had never envisioned. โHomelessness is not a noun, it's a verb,โ M said. โItโs not a label nor a tag.โ Living in her car had been overwhelming, particularly figuring out how to feed herself and Cheeto.
We asked M what services are missing that could better address homelessness in King County, and she said a key component that is missing is addressing the underlying issues that contribute to homelessness. M said. She explained that often it is not that individuals do not want to seek services but rather that they have developed mistrust in โenvironments that are always changingโ and that should be addressed.
While Mโs experience of homelessness has come to an end, she recognizes that for many individuals, it has not. She hopes that others will reconsider reframing their pre-conceived notions of homelessness, noting that many โfamilies [are now living in their vehicle and] being affected by the federal administration. What are we doing to help each other?โ
