The last day Atwater Lifeguards will be at the beach will be Sunday, August 16.

As a reminder, the Village wants to be responsible in managing the public beach at Atwater so that community members are safe utilizing the public space. The beach continues to have a maximum capacity of 300. During peak hours, Coastline Services will have a staff person working at the gate at the top of the bluff reminding users of the beach rules and capacity limit. Signs will also be posted explaining the rules. We please ask all users to be respectful of the staff working the beach and implementing this measure to protect all community members. In addition, we please ask users to monitor your time at the beach if it is at capacity and perhaps leave sooner than normal so that others can enjoy the beach, too. Lastly, please do your best to wear a face mask when around others in public spaces, especially if you are unable to remain at least six feet apart.

If you have questions, contact Eric Gietzen at [email protected]. Please be safe the rest of this summer and enjoy Shorewood's public beach!

EXCAVATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL REMEDIATION COMPLETE AT FORMER QUEENSWAY CLEANERS

Soil excavation and removal, which began July 8 is now complete. The excavated soil was treated with liquid and solid amendments, and tested to prior to removal. Two former gas tanks that were previously abandoned-in-place were also removed. The whole area, including clearly-impacted soils, was backfilled and compacted. Clean topsoil and surface material is scheduled to be installed the week of August 3, with grass vegetation to be installed and established through September. The temporary, perimeter fence will be removed once the site has been restored. Groundwater monitoring of the site will continue into 2021. The contractor performing the work has been required to provide weekly updates through Fact Sheets (https://www.villageofshorewood.org/DocumentCenter/View/8300/4300-Oakland---Fact-Sheet-July-29-2020), which will continue to be shared.

GOVERNOR EVERS ISSUES STATEWIDE ORDER REQUIRING FACE MASKS

Gov. Tony Evers has declared a statewide public health emergency order requiring everyone to wear a face mask while in an indoor space.

The order was issued today, goes into effect Saturday and will expire September 28 unless extended.

You can read the order here (https://evers.wi.gov/Documents/COVID19/EO082-PHECOVIDSecondSpike.pdf).

In conjunction with the League of Wisconsin Municipalities and students from UW-Madison, the Village of Shorewood has published a video regarding the recently passed mask ordinance.

We wear masks to keep our community safe. Our Village of Shorewood has adopted a mandatory mask ordinance for indoor spaces that are open to the public. It is a small action, and an effective way to do our part to protect ourselves, our loved ones, and our neighbors as we support Shorewood businesses and services. Remember to wear your mask! We can still see your smiling eyes and we will know that you care. Let’s all do our part to protect our community. #WeAreAllIn

LAST DAY FOR ON-STREET OVERNIGHT PARKING SURVEY

Based on the recommendations within the Village's 2019 Transportation and Parking Analysis (https://www.villageofshorewood.org/DocumentCenter/View/7794/), the Village Board has been contemplating potential changes to Overnight Parking Permits. These changes could include the introduction of a publicly-available, monthly on-street overnight parking permit. In order to help the Village Board better understand how their decisions could impact the reality of overnight parking in the Village, this brief survey (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeLFfHZFsd23_odMmh24R84sOalFsGfLdBHbas_WYbfnqHFVw/viewform) has been developed to gauge the interest of residents who do not currently purchase an overnight parking permit.

If you have not taken the survey, completion by midnight tonight, July 28th is requested. The results will then be shared with the Village Board at their August 3 meeting.

The Shorewood Public Art Committee has been working for the past two years to bring wonderful enhancements to 11 traffic signal boxes around our Village.

Over the winter, the PAC worked to convene a jury of Shorewood residents to select artists to design the boxes. All the artists selected by the jury have ties to the Village.

The PAC then collaborated with the Shorewood Historical Society to introduce the artists to the history of our community. The artists responded with designs that will be affixed to the 11 traffic signal boxes in early August, weather permitting.

Over 25% of what we "throw away" is food scraps. Food scraps cause a lot of environmental problems in the landfill like greenhouse gases and groundwater pollution. The Village of Shorewood is committed to sustainability and has created a voluntary curbside compost program. Join the 275 residents who have made a pledge to divert food scraps and yard material from the landfill. It is less than $3/week to participate and you will receive a collection kit for your home AND a 32 gallon cart for outside.

Join the waiting list here (https://www.compostcrusader.com/residential/) on Compost Crusader 's website by inputting your address to the left of the map and following the pre-registration prompts. Once we have 50 people that are pre-registered, then the Village will order more outside carts for the residents to get started. Outside carts are serviced by Compost Crusader weekly April-November and every other week December-March. Residents who are a part of the program also receive generous discounts on finished compost all year long!

07/14/2020

Shorewood residents have experienced many challenges this year including illness, isolation, grief, unexpected home schooling, job loss, and more. At the same time, neighbors are stepping up in large numbers to support each other. Instead of selecting just one neighbor or neighborhood to honor this year, we want to celebrate all our Shorewood heroes and helpers.

Some neighbors have done something big, like organizing a march, while others do smaller, quieter acts of kindness like bringing a meal, picking up groceries, helping with yard work, or reaching out with a song or caring note.

Please join us in nominating one or more neighbors to be recognized with a letter of thanks and the opportunity to be recognized on the Shorewood Neighbor Honor Roll on the Village website for doing all the little and big things that make Shorewood a kind, welcoming place to live. Submission deadline is Friday, July 17, 2020. Here is the form to nominate someone: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfyWTwhpa6OV-6tG1S7M_uqSkhjM9xdPVbvKuR5zkwOy6rAhg/viewform

The Village Board and Community Development Authority (CDA) are scheduled to discuss economic development and housing goals and priorities on Monday, July 13 at 6:00 pm. This meeting builds on previous strategic planning that took place on March 12, following the Village’s recently completed Housing Market Study and Needs Analysis (https://www.villageofshorewood.org/DocumentCenter/View/7788/Comprehensive-Housing-Market-Study-and-Needs-Analysis---Shorewood-WI---2132020) and a survey (https://www.villageofshorewood.org/DocumentCenter/View/8250/Village-of-Shorewood-Strategic-Planning-Survey-Results-Refined-Final-Summaries-3-12-2020) of Village stakeholders. This meeting seeks to have both groups collectively confirm their top 1-2 priorities related to broad economic development housing goals, along with action items or strategies to implement those priorities. Meeting materials will be posted in the Village’s Agenda Center.

The meeting will take place virtually and may be accessed via computer at https://zoom.us/j/95455869654, or via telephone 1-301-715-8592 and access code 954-5586-9654. Members of the public will be muted and have their video turned off upon entry. The Chair may allow for the public to speak following member discussion on an item. To ensure an efficient meeting, members of the public should not speak until called upon to do so. Members of the public will be unable to unmute themselves nor turn on their video.

07/09/2020

The Village Board conducted a special meeting Wednesday, July 8 to discuss and consider an ordinance that would require community members to wear a mask. The Village Board adopted an ordinance that contains the following actions:

1. Masks must be worn in indoor areas open to the public until January 20, 2021 unless extended by the Village Board in consultation with the North Shore Health Department.

2. The Village will be contacting establishments and community members if they are not adhering to the mask requirement indoors. You can file a complaint with the Village through the Face Mask Complaint Form (https://www.villageofshorewood.org/FormCenter/Face-Mask-Complaints-14/Face-Mask-Complaints-65).

3. The requirement to wear a mask indoors in public places begins Friday, July 10.

4. Exceptions for the mask requirement include:

- Persons under 4 years of age.

- Persons who fall into the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s guidelines for those who should not wear face coverings due to a medical condition, mental health condition, developmental disability, or are otherwise covered under the Americans with disabilities act.

- Persons who have upper-respiratory chronic conditions and silent disabilities.

- Persons in settings where it is not practical or feasible to wear face coverings, including when obtaining or rendering goods or services, such as the receipt of dental services or medical treatments.

5. While there is no mask requirement for outdoor areas, the Village encourages community members to wear a mask outdoors, especially if you are approaching individuals within six feet.

A recording of the meeting will soon be posted on the Village's Agenda Center (https://www.villageofshorewood.org/agendacenter). A copy of the approved ordinance will be available here (https://www.villageofshorewood.org/932/_2020). Any questions related to the ordinance can contact me, Village Manager Rebecca Ewald, at 414.847.2701 or via email at [email protected]. Lastly, check out a grassroots campaign called Mask Up Shorewood being started by Shorewood residents (https://www.facebook.com/maskupshorewood).

I'm not sure who in your local government thought that it was a good idea to penalize every visitor who visits your town with parking tickets for parking in designated parking areas due to overnight parking, but I hope you weren't trying to attract tourism. How off-putting and unwelcoming. Your cops see that I have Georgia plates. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that I would have no way to know about a completely inane parking rule that makes zero sense and isn't posted on the street. Maybe we don't need to be punitive? Just a thought. It's not a great look guys...do you really need the money that bad? Ya'll didn't look broke in that part of town...
