The Shorter Fire Department responded to a two-vehicle accident with entrapment on Highway 229 near I-85 Exit 26 at 8:06 a.m. today. Waugh-Mt Meigs Fire/Rescue and City of Tallassee Fire Department assisted under mutual aid. One driver was extricated and airlifted to a medical facility by Haynes LifeFlight, and the other driver was transported by ambulance. We thank all responding agencies and law enforcement, including Alabama State Troopers, Macon County Sheriff's Office, Shorter Police Department, and Franklin Police Department, for their roles in securing the scene. At approximately 17:03 this afternoon Shorter Fire Rescue was paged out to an overturned 18 wheeler at the 21 MP I85 SB. Upon arrival units found a double car-hauler on its side in the median. The driver was not injured during the accident.

Within the next hour, ALEA and ALDOT will be closing all SB traffic at Exit 22 and detouring through the Town of Shorter and onto US Hwy 80. This allow tow recovery efforts to have both lanes for their operations. Please check Algo Traffic for updates if your travel plans will be taking you through this area. At this time it is unknown whether this will cause an impact to the morning commute.

At approximately 7:44 am this morning, Shorter FD responded to a 2 vehicle accident I85 SB MP 24. Two trucks collided and came to rest on the shoulder of the highway in a water way. One driver was safely extricated from the vehicle in the water and transported for further medical care. The other driver received minor injuries. There were no life threatening injuries.

The tractor trailer fire on I85 SB at the 21 MP has been brought under control by the Shorter and Waugh FDs. The driver was carrying lithium ion batteries which caused extreme heat from the fire. There were no injuries to the driver or firefighters on scene. The wreckage is now being cooled and removed so ALDOT can inspect the bridge barriers and safely open the roadway. We will try to give an update as to when the SB lanes will reopen.

We have a multi vehicle accident involving fire on I85 MP26 SB. We also have an earlier accident on the SB side in the same area. Avoid this area if possible as first responders are taking care of these calls. I85 SB is shut down at this time.
