This year's parade was a historic event, marking the return of the Lean, Mean, Green Machine, also known as the D.C. Wolfe Marching Bandits, to grace the streets of Shorter, Alabama!

We would like for all parents throughout the West Macon community to join us for the Pre-K Enrollment Information Meeting for children ages 3 and 4. We look forward to seeing you there! The meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 15th, 2026, at 5:00 p.m., in the gymnasium of Deborah Cannon Wolfe Elementary. See you there!!!

On behalf of Mayor Powell and the council members of the Town of Shorter, Alabama, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone for participating in or joining us for a magical Shorter Liberty Day weekend this year.

The weekend kickoff with the Deborah Cannon Wolfe Marching Bandits banquet. The banquet was held by Dr. Smith and his mighty bandits to celebrate the 50th anniversary of becoming the state of Alabama's bicentennial band in 1976. Dr. Smith and his Marching Bandits reminisced on beautiful memories and their legendary accomplishments. They also held a moment of remembrance for fellow Marching Bandits who have transitioned. The Deborah Cannon Wolfe Marching Bandits banquet was truly both a historical and a special moment in our town's history. The banquet was held at a poetically fitting place, the cafeteria of Deborah Cannon Wolfe Elementary School. This event was truly a banquet of Shorter legends!

As Shorter Liberty Day weekend begins, we continue to highlight the Shorter Legends and West Macon heroes who have etched their names in the annals of local, state, and national history.

The son of Mayor Willie Mae Powell and Harold Powell, Harold Deon Powell was a proud native of Shorter, Alabama. Mr. Harold Powell became the first Black American President of the College Democrats of America. Mr. Powell had the honor of introducing the likes of former President Bill Clinton and Civil Rights Activist Jesse Jackson. In addition to numerous positions held in his illustrious career, he served as the Town Clerk and a volunteer firefighter for the Town of Shorter. He was also a proud member of the Shorter Masonic Lodge #533. His life has been remembered and celebrated by some of Alabama's highest-ranking elected officials, including Governor Kay Ivey and Congressman Mike Rogers. Harold Deon Powell was a trailblazer and visionary for the Town of Shorter and the West Macon community.

The Town of Shorter and the West Macon community are home to individuals and organizations that have made an impact in the annals of local, state, national, and global history. One individual who exemplifies this is Madeline Coleman Roach. She spent part of her early life in the Milstead community and served in the United States Army during World War II as a member of the historic 6888th Postal Battalion. This battalion was the only predominantly Black American Women's Army Corps to be deployed during World War II. If you have not done so, please watch and support Tyler Perry's "The Six Triple Eight," or visit our Shorter Heritage Museum on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm, or during community events, to learn more about this legendary battalion.
