CPSO and Shreveport Fire Department Team Up for Community Safety Weeks

Caddo Parish residents are invited to Safety Town for Community Week activities. In partnership with the Shreveport Fire Department, this is an opportunity for families and neighbors to learn about safety and preparedness while gaining access to vital resources.

The first Community Week will take place September 9 and 10. On Wednesday, September 9, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., participants will receive information on fire safety and active shooter awareness. The following day, Thursday, September 10, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., programming will focus on su***de prevention and gun safety.

The second Community Week will take place September 28 through October 1, with a different safety topic presented each day:

● Monday: Adult & Infant CPR — 8:30–11:30 a.m. or 12–3 p.m.

● Tuesday: Fire Extinguisher Usage — 8:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

● Wednesday: Situational Awareness — 8:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

● Thursday: Phone & Internet Scams — 8:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

All educational sessions are free and will take place at Safety Town, 8910 Jewella Ave. in Shreveport. Walk-ins are welcome, but registration is encouraged by calling 318-681-0869.

PURRFECT TIMING: DEPUTY RESCUES TWO KITTENS FROM I-220 🐾
A routine patrol turned into a lifesaving rescue when Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Deputy A. Trujillo spotted two tiny kittens in danger along Interstate 220.
With traffic moving at highway speeds, Deputy Trujillo knew the kittens needed help. He safely removed both from the busy interstate and brought them into his patrol vehicle, where they quickly traded roadside danger for a much safer ride. 🚔🐱🐱
And, of course, every good rescue story needs names.
Meet 220 and Lakeshore — named after the area where their unexpected adventure came to an end.
Law enforcement duties can take many forms, and sometimes being in the right place at the right time means helping even the smallest members of our community.

Grandparents Day Event at Safety Town Focuses on Family Safety

Grandparents play an important role in keeping their families safe, and Sheriff’s Safety Town is helping equip them with information to do just that during a special event in recognition of Grandparents Day.

The Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office will celebrate Grandparents Day on Friday, September 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Sheriff’s Safety Town, 8910 Jewella Avenue.

The event will focus on safety concerns grandparents may encounter while caring for their grandchildren. Topics will include internet and gaming safety, medication and household safety, and stranger awareness.

Registration is available by calling Sheriff’s Safety Town at 318-681-0869, but walk-ups are welcome.

September Youth Diversion Classes Offer Positive Path for Teens

The Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office is inviting parents and guardians to bring their pre-teens and teens to a free youth diversion program designed to help young people make positive choices.

Two class session options will be offered in September. Teens may attend either Saturday, September 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or Saturday, September 26, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Both classes will be held at the Community Relations and Crime Prevention Office, located at 1501 Corporate Drive in Shreveport.

The program is geared toward youth who may be facing challenges related to peer pressure, behavioral issues, substance abuse, gun violence, or other factors that can place them at risk. Through education, discussion, and mentorship, teens will learn strategies for making responsible decisions, developing positive relationships, and avoiding behaviors that can lead to involvement in the criminal justice system.

Parents and guardians who believe their child could benefit from the program are encouraged to sign them up for the class. For additional information, contact Deputy Vernita Williams at 318-681-0869.

National Night Out
National Night Out will be held on October 6, 2026. The Caddo Sheriff's Office has started accepting applications for street-blocking permits. Residents in the unincorporated areas of Caddo Parish who wish to close their streets for block parties on this date can apply for a permit.
Applications for the permit are available at the sheriff's north and south substations, as well as at the Patrol Office located at 4910 North Market Street in Shreveport. To make the National Night Out form more accessible to Caddo Parish residents, it is also available on our website at CaddoSheriff.org. You can find the form under the "Community" section by clicking the National Night Out icon. Once you access the page, you can fill it out and submit it online or print it out and email it to us at [email protected]. Alternatively, you can submit the form in person at any of the substations mentioned above.
Completed applications must be submitted to the nearest Caddo Sheriff's office substation by 4 PM on September 30, 2026. If approved, the permit will allow you to block portions of your street.
National Night Out is an opportunity for residents to take a stand against crime by participating in neighborhood gatherings and crime prevention events.
Sheriff Henry Whitehorn, Sr. stated, "It's a great opportunity to meet your neighbors, show support for law enforcement, and learn what's happening in your community. Criminals can't win if we are united in our approach to fighting crime. We must have a T.E.A.M. (Together Everyone Achieves More) attitude."

Free Reading Program Open to Families

The Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities to provide families with a free reading program. Prime Time Family Reading is designed to help young children build a strong foundation in literacy, creativity, and critical thinking. The six-week program kicks off at 6 p.m. on Monday, September 14, at Sheriff’s Safety Town, 8910 Jewella Avenue, Shreveport, LA 71118.

Prime Time Family Reading combines interactive storytelling and discussion led by deputies. Children will explore important topics such as fairness, courage, and dreams in a safe and welcoming environment. Families with children ages 6–10 are encouraged to attend. In addition to dinner and door prizes for families, children will receive award-winning books to take home.

CPSO Concludes Operation Safe Passage

The Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office has completed a one-day operation called Safe Passage, which aims to enhance proactive patrol visibility, address traffic violations, and discourage unsafe driving behaviors.

During this operation, deputies conducted high-visibility patrols and targeted traffic enforcement to promote safer roadways and tackle public safety concerns.

Operation Safe Passage resulted in 65 traffic stops, leading to 31 citations and 29 warnings. Additionally, the operation resulted in five arrests, including one felony arrest and four misdemeanor/summons arrests.

“Operations like Safe Passage allow our deputies to take a proactive approach to keeping our roadways and communities safe,” stated Caddo Parish Sheriff Henry Whitehorn Sr. “The goal is not simply enforcement; it is to increase visibility, encourage responsible driving, and help prevent dangerous behavior before it leads to a serious crash or other tragedies.”

Final Totals for Operation Safe Passage:
- 1 Felony Arrest
- 4 Misdemeanor/Summons Arrests
- 65 Traffic Stops
- 31 Traffic Citations
- 29 Traffic Warnings

The increased law enforcement presence enabled deputies to identify and address traffic violations while ensuring visibility throughout the operational area. The results will also aid the Sheriff's Office in evaluating future targeted traffic enforcement efforts and crafting effective deployment strategies.

Safety Town Opens for After School Program

The Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office is offering an after-school program at Sheriff’s Safety Town this fall to provide youth with safety education once the school day ends. The Safety Town After-School Program will be held Mondays through Thursdays from 3 to 5 p.m., September 8 through November 19, and is open to youth up to 17 years old.

Throughout the program, students will take part in activities and lessons designed to help them make safe decisions at home, at school, online, and in the community. Topics will include gun safety, fire safety, CPR, weather safety, situational awareness, internet safety, peer pressure resistance, saying no to strangers, and careers in law enforcement.

The after-school program will be held at Sheriff’s Safety Town, 8910 Jewella Avenue in Shreveport. For more information about the program, contact Safety Town at 318-681-0869.
