This afternoon, SFD received a call for a mercury spill that was found outside a residence. E-3 and Car 3 responded and confirmed the substance to be mercury. The Mass. State Hazmat team responded for proper containment, clean up, and metering of the interior/exterior of residence with no hazard remaining after clean up.

The Department is celebrating the 100th birthday of our American LaFrance fire engine. The truck was delivered to town on July 29, 1926. It is currently in the process of refurbishment and is starting to be reassembled. Funding for the project is provided by the CPC.

SFD, SPD, & Mass. DOT were out at 464 Hartford pike late this morning for a motorist who struck a boulder the size of a bowling ball in the roadway. The vehicles oil pan was compromised and left an oil spill approx. 100 yards in length. Fortunately, there were no injuries, it happened in a section with two east bound lanes, the spill wasn’t tracked further and rain held off.

Day 5 of the Shrewsbury Fire Department Youth Academy: Graduation.

Today was the end of the academy for class 003. We looked back on the week, talked about not only the good memories, but how the academy can be improved. We look forward to continuing to improve upon our program and are excited for next year!

Class 003, you all did amazing this past week. All of our expectations of your class were not only met, they were exceeded. Although we hate to say goodbye, we will hopefully see some of you down the road! Enjoy the rest of your summer, and good luck this upcoming school year!

Day 4 of the Shrewsbury Fire Department Youth Academy: Field Trip Day.

Today, class 003 took a tour of the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy. The class got to see full time firefighter recruits train and see the similarities of their training up to this point.

Class 003 started the second half of the day with a BBQ and then spent the afternoon training with the jaws of life and conducting vehicle extrication operations.

Special thanks to AA transportation for our transportation, Loveys Towing for the delivery of vehicles, the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy for their hospitality, and Shrewsbury Fire Department Staff for their assistance and sponsoring of the BBQ and helping with vehicle extrication!

It takes a village sometimes!
