I hope this post will find Veterans well. My name is Ken Huls. I've been a member of Post 324 for 20+ years but didnt actively participate un till last year. I served in the US Air Force as a Security and Law Enforcement Specialist from May of 1983- May of 1996. I served proudly. But as the years of becoming a civilian and working in the job field, you seem to forget what it was like being active duty. In some cases, veterans experience some very bad times in war or military campaigns and try to not bring back those memories and be reminded of them every day. But, hopefully each veteran, like myself, take pride in serving and also Im honored to have served with the best men and women of the armed services and protect and defend this great nation. But, the American Legion is here to support and cherish the men and women who have served in all branches, during war and peace time and to honor our comrades. Here's the problem. The American Legion is about to become extinct due to lack of membership. Sibley, at one time in the 70s had almost 200 members. We are down to 19. 8 are active members ( Im one of them). There are members that have been in the Legion for almost 60 years. But these honorable members are becoming elderly and can't physically participate or worse yet, have passed away. Active members participate in parades, school events, and especially funerals. Our military legacy is celebrated by being honored at our passing and funeral with our colors ( our Nation's Flag) over our coffin and having your surviving spouse receive that flag to keep that memory of the member who served proudly. Bottom line.....we need Veterans to become members...to keep the Legion alive. I know we are all busy but remembering you served and raised your right hand still means something. We meet every first Tuesday at 7 PM at the Legion Bldg in Sibley. We take December- March off other than funerals and parades. Membership for Sibley is $40 per year. ( First years is paid.) Please give it some thought Veterans....Keep your service alive. You can call any member of the Legion or just come to a monthly meeting and we can go from there. You can also call or message me at 712-461-0343 or email me at [email protected].. Again, thank you for your service.
