FYI: Prices are being increased

📣Please note that effective July 1, 2026, the fee for certified copies of vital records in Iowa will increase from $15 to $20 per copy. This includes certified copies of birth, death, and marriage records.

The process for obtaining certified copies will remain the same, and the marriage application fee will remain $35.

The additional revenue generated from this fee adjustment will help support increased workload and associated costs at the State Medical Examiner’s Office.

If you have questions regarding certified copies or applications, please contact the County Recorder’s Office.

🔍 Survey vs. Plat — What’s the difference?
A survey is a detailed, on-the-ground measurement of your specific property, showing exact boundaries and features.
A plat is a recorded map that shows how land is divided into lots, streets, and easements—often used in subdivisions.

📌 In some counties, a land survey is required when selling off a portion of a larger parcel (like part of a section) to ensure accurate legal descriptions and proper division.

A property survey gives you peace of mind and helps protect your investment for the long run.

Turtles are on the move right now, and they're STUBBORN. That's because they're out looking for a place to lay eggs (sometimes in gravel near the road, unfortunately). 🐢 🚧

Give them a hand during World Turtle Week (and beyond) without making them grumpier 👇

If you see a turtle trying to cross the road and it's safe for you to do so:
Pick up the turtle with both hands (with gloves if you have them) by the shell, and from behind. Do NOT pick up a turtle by its tail! (It can cause spinal damage.)

For snapping turtles, you may want to just encourage it across the road rather than picking it up. If you do pick it up, grab the snapper by its back legs with its head facing AWAY from your body. ***Trust us on the "away from your body" part.***

Always move the turtle in the direction it was already moving. Otherwise, it will just try to cross again after you leave. We said they're stubborn, remember? Do not take the turtle to a different location, and especially not home with you. They don't need to be rescued, just a crossing guard. 🐢🚸

If the turtle is sitting in gravel, leave it be, as it's likely nesting.

Wash your hands thoroughly after handling a turtle.

Otters don't wear life jackets - for obvious reasons. Except in this case, of course, for attention. 🦺

For people, though, there are some pretty obvious reasons why you *otter* wear your life jacket.

Drowning is swift and silent. It only takes half a cup of water for somebody to drown. There may not be the splashing and yelling you'd expect.

Yes, we know, you can swim. And that's a great skill to have, whether you're boating, kayaking, canoeing, floating or wading! However, accidents happen. Injuries happen. Swift currents happen, even in ankle-deep water.

In natural bodies of water, there are sudden drop-offs, holes, submerged shelves, foot holds and rock ledges. Current strength in Iowa rivers is often deceiving, even for strong swimmers.

Don't forget, wearing life jackets is required for kids under age 13 while on a boat or in a kayak, and it's recommended for little ones fishing from shore or a dock, and while swimming, too.

Have fun and stay safe on the water this summer: https://bit.ly/4dCvsz0
