As we approach Memorial Day, we pause to remember the true meaning behind the holiday. Memorial Day is more than the unofficial start of summer or a long weekend. It is a day set aside to honor and remember the men and women of the United States Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to our country.

The origins of Memorial Day date back to the years following the Civil War, when communities began decorating the graves of fallen servicemen with flowers in remembrance and gratitude. Originally known as “Decoration Day,” it later became Memorial Day and is now observed nationwide as a time to reflect on the sacrifices made for the freedoms we enjoy today.

Their service and sacrifice should never be forgotten. We encourage everyone to take time this Memorial Day to remember those who gave all in defense of our nation.

In observance of Memorial Day, the Cheyenne County Veterans Service Office will be closed on Monday, May 25. We will reopen during normal business hours on Tuesday, May 26.

We wish everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day weekend.

This morning (Friday, May 22) our office will be closed from 9:00 AM to approximately 10:30 AM while we assist with placing flags for veterans at the Greenwood Cemetery in preparation for Memorial Day.

We encourage anyone who has an hour to give to join us at 9:30 AM at the east end of the cemetery to help place flags in honor of our fallen service members. Gloves are recommended if you have them available.

Memorial Day is a time to remember and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Taking part in traditions like placing flags is one small but meaningful way we can continue to show that their service and sacrifice are not forgotten.

Last night, several of our incredible DAV volunteer drivers were recognized by the VA for their continued dedication and service to local veterans.

Gary was recognized for reaching 500 volunteer hours, and Bonita for reaching 300 volunteer hours. In addition, all of our drivers received the Distinguished Service Award for their commitment to ensuring veterans are able to get to and from their VA medical appointments.

These volunteers give their time, early mornings, miles on the road, and steady dedication to help make sure veterans in our rural community can access the care they have earned. Their service often happens quietly behind the scenes, but the impact they make is significant.

We are incredibly proud of them and deeply grateful for the compassion, reliability, and continued support they show to our veteran community. Congratulations and thank you for all you do.

Last night, Cindy with the Sidney NE Elk's Lodge No. 1894 presented the Cheyenne County Veterans Service Office with a $1,500 Freedom Grant to help assist local veterans with utility bills.

We are incredibly thankful for organizations like the Elks Lodge that continue to step up for our veteran community in meaningful ways. Their support goes far beyond words. They consistently look for ways to help, serve, and give back to the men and women who have served our country.

This funding will now be available to assist eligible veterans in our area who may be struggling with utility expenses. If you or a veteran you know is in need of assistance, please contact our office for more information.

Thank you again to Cindy and the Sidney NE Elk's Lodge No. 1894 for your continued support of veterans in Cheyenne County.
