Hello all! Happy Fall!

The Monday, September 30, 2019 meeting will be a "Members Only" meeting. Winter business needs to be discussed and unfortunately a 45 minute meeting is not normally long enough for winter business.

We appreciate all the support! If you planned to attend the meeting on Monday but have not been voted into the club as a member yet please reach out for information on the next meeting.

Due to the possible length of the September 30th meeting a Public Demonstration will NOT be held that night.

Happy riding to you all!

"PROOF OF NEGATIVE COGGINS TEST IS REQUIRED."

As a horse owner, you have probably heard this a million times. But do you know what your horse is ACTUALLY getting tested for?

The agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID), commonly known as the "Coggings" test, is one of the two serologic tests used to diagnose Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA), a potentially fatal blood-borne infectious viral disease that produces a life-long infection. A positive Coggins test would indicate the presence in your horse's blood of EIA-specific antibodies.

There is no known treatment for EIA at this time, and no preventative vaccine. Infected horses become lifelong carriers and pose a risk of infection to other horses. As such, management options for an EIA-positive horse are euthanasia or lifetime quarantine. PREVENTION is key to keeping your horse protected from contracting the EIA virus!

This week the AAEP published comprehensive guidelines providing the most current information on diagnostics, transmission, risk factors, control and biosecurity strategies for EIA. You can find them on our website at https://aaep.org/news/aaep-publishes-equine-infectious-anemia-guidelines
