On July 17th the Sidney Fire Department received a generous donation check from the Sidney Federal Credit Union for an emergency response earlier this month. Because we are an entirely volunteer and unpaid organization, recognition and appreciation of the services we provide to the Village of Sidney businesses and residents in times of need are greatly appreciated. We thank SFCU for this donation that will be used to purchase much needed equipment.

At 7:00PM this evening the Sidney Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire with smoke and flames visible in a multi-unit apartment complex. Upon arrival, heavy smoke was showing from the ridge of the roof. Sidney firefighters launched an aggressive interior and exterior attack and contained the fire to one apartment. Assistance was provided for overhaul and extinguishment by Masonville Volunteer Fire Department, Unadilla Fire Department, Sidney Center Fire Department, Oneonta Fire Department, fire department, and Guilford New York Fire Department and EMS Squad.

We thank our members for their dedication to training to perform such a successful attack and bring what could have been a much more devastating situation under control quickly and efficiently.

At 2:49PM the Sidney Fire Department was dispatched to the Masonville fire district under the mutual aid plan for a working barn fire. Upon arrival, Sidney was assigned command of the scene and began extinguishment of the fire. Water supply was setup and many mutual aid fire departments were requested and provided tankers and personnel at the scene. Collectively the following departments worked seamlessly to bring the fire under control:
Masonville Volunteer Fire Department, Sidney Center Fire Department, Trout Creek Volunteer Fire Company Inc, Deposit Fire Department, Walton Fire Department, Hancock Volunteer Fire Department-Official, Borden's Hose Company, Bainbridge Fire / EMS, Unadilla Fire Department, and Guilford New York Fire Department and EMS Squad. Sidney Emergency Medical Services stood by and assisted in rehab of firefighters. NYSDOT provided traffic control during the event.

A shout out to the Town Of Masonville for providing an excavator to allow for full extinguishment of the fire and save countless hours of hand pulling the barn and contents apart.

Food and beverages were provided by many local community members who stopped and graciously dropped off coolers of ice cold water and beverages to the firefighters in the high heat and humidity. Several local businesses provided food; Gavin’s, Gavin’s Grinders, and Sidney Joe’s Pizzeria.

It’s times like these that show the true pride and compassion all surrounding communities have when it comes to times of needs. Stay cool!

Today at 2:08PM the Sidney fire department was requested through our mutual aid plan to the city of Oneonta for our ladder truck and all available personnel to respond to a working structure fire at a multi-story apartment complex. Upon arrival our ladder truck was the first operating ladder on scene and made quick work of checking for extensions and hot spots. Crews then performed ventilation assignments and cleared the scene at approximately 4:40PM.

Today members of the Sidney Fire Department participated in the annual Memorial Day parade. As a way to honor those we remember as well as America’s 250th birthday, members decided to march with the large department flag. It was an impressive sight seeing this flag span curb to curb on Main Street.

Don’t forget to take a moment today to remember all the members of our Armed Forces who paid the ultimate sacrifice and never returned home.

Have a safe and enjoyable day.

Tonight members of the Sidney Fire Department held a work detail to put new equipment into service.

Many reading this may not realize that the Sidney Fire Department is composed of two parts; the Village of Sidney Fire Department and the Sidney Fire Department Corporation. What’s the difference you may ask? The Fire Department performs the firematic duties such as drills, trainings and responding to emergencies. Our Corporation is made up of a Board of Directors and Trustees who oversee our training center, donations, investments, and general business matters of the department.

The officers and members of the Sidney Fire Department Corporation are proud to announce the recent purchase of new Scott SCBA air packs, bottles and masks. These packs will provide for years of life safety equipment for our members to continue to perform their selfless duties. This purchase was over $215,000 and was paid for through years of fundraisers, donations, and smart money investments. That’s right-this purchase cost neither the Village of Sidney nor the taxpayer residents any money, and actually avoided a potential 11% increase to make this necessary life safety purchase!!!

The next time you see our department having a turkey raffle, bowling tournament or other fundraiser, remember that every dollar counts! All money we raise gets invested by our Corporation for larger investment purchases for the department and to offset any taxpayer funds or tax increases.

We thank each and every person who has donated to our department. Take note that your donations are not spent on frivolous purchases. To those who will donate at future events, keep in mind that every bit counts and when a community comes together big things can happen!
