Sidney Fire Department - Nebraska Established in 1879 the Sidney VFD covers 284 square miles in the Southern Panhandle of Nebraska

The Sidney Volunteer Fire Department was organized in 1879 and is governed by two different entities:
•City of Sidney's City Council
•Rural Fire Board of Sidney Rural Fire District #1

•The Sidney Fire Department serves a population of 7,960 in a 284-square-mile area with the following equipment:

◦2 Utility Truck's
◦1 Rescue Truck
◦1 Platform

🇺🇸 9/11 REMEMBRANCE — LOCATION UPDATE 🇺🇸

We now have a location for the Sidney Volunteer Fire Department’s 9/11 Remembrance on Friday, September 11, 2026.

September 11, 2001 — 25 Years Later

It does not seem possible that it has been 25 years since that fateful day — September 11, 2001 — the day that changed our nation forever.

On Friday, September 11, 2026, the Sidney Volunteer Fire Department will have one of our fire trucks stationed with the American flag proudly hoisted in remembrance of the 2,977 people who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, and in honor of the countless families, first responders, and others whose lives were forever changed that day.

Among those who lost their lives at the World Trade Center were 343 firefighters, 71 law-enforcement officers, and 8 private EMTs and paramedics.

Our 9/11 Remembrance

The Sidney Volunteer Fire Department will have the truck and flag on display from:

6:46:30 AM — 3:20:52 PM Mountain Time

These times hold special meaning.

6:46 AM Mountain Time corresponds to approximately 8:46 AM Eastern Time, when American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center, beginning the attacks in New York City.

3:20:52 PM Mountain Time corresponds to 5:20:52 PM Eastern Time, the exact time that 7 World Trade Center collapsed, marking the final major building collapse at the World Trade Center complex that day.

The location of the fire truck is still being determined and will be announced once finalized.

Help Us Remember

We would also like to invite members of our community to write a letter that will become part of this remembrance.

You may give your letter to one of the first responders who will be at the truck on September 11. Your letter could include:

• What you remember about where you were or what you were doing on September 11, 2001
• Your personal experience or memories of that day
• A thank-you to a first responder
• A prayer or message to the families who lost loved ones
• Your thoughts about how we can make sure future generations never forget September 11

These letters will not be opened by us. They will be collected and sent to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York City as part of our community’s remembrance of that day.

We ask that you take just one moment out of your day on Friday, September 11, 2026 to remember.

Pause for a moment of silence.
Say a prayer.
Remember those who never came home.
Remember the families who were left behind.
Or simply stop by the fire truck and thank a first responder.

Our new sign has been installed, and we couldn’t be happier with how it turned out!

Thank you to IWS for their work on the sign, and a special thank you to Gordon’s Body Shop for generously donating the finish work and paint to complete the project. We truly appreciate your support of the Sidney Volunteer Fire Department!

We’d also like to thank the members of the Sidney Volunteer Fire Department who took time out of their weekend to assemble and mount the new sign on the building. We greatly appreciate your time, hard work, and dedication.

We’re proud to have our new sign proudly displayed on the station and couldn’t be happier with the finished product!

Last night, our members trained on low-angle rope rescue techniques, focusing on safely packaging and moving a patient in difficult terrain.

Members practiced securing a patient in the litter before moving to the field, where crews worked together to navigate a steep embankment. Our firefighters practiced several different techniques for moving and hoisting the litter, including using rope systems and a four-person carry.

These hands-on training opportunities allow our members to build confidence, improve teamwork, and become more proficient with the equipment and techniques we may need when faced with a real rescue.

Water & Ice Rescue Training

Tonight, the Sidney Volunteer Fire Department joined forces with Sidney EMS for hands-on water and ice rescue training at the Sidney Aquatic Center.

Firefighters participated in a variety of hands-on rescue scenarios, including simulated water and ice rescues, donning ice rescue suits, and techniques for assisting patients with potential neck or back injuries. Crews also practiced self-survival and self-rescue techniques in the event a firefighter unexpectedly enters a body of water while wearing full structural firefighting gear.

Crews also worked with several different throwable rescue devices, including an arm-lock rescue device that inflates and secures around a person’s arm, allowing rescuers to pull the individual to safety without immediately entering the water.

The evening provided valuable hands-on experience with specialized equipment and rescue techniques while strengthening coordination between the fire department and EMS during water-related emergencies.

We appreciate Sidney EMS for joining us for tonight’s training and the Sidney Aquatic Center for allowing us to utilize the facility.

As our Independence Day celebrations come to a close, we’d like to thank everyone who helped make the holiday a safe and enjoyable one.

While our members staffed and conducted the community fireworks display, they also remained ready to respond to emergencies. Between the evening of July 4 and the early morning hours of July 5, the Sidney Volunteer Fire Department responded to the following incidents:

2044 hrs – Reported smoke in the area. Firefighters investigated the reported smoke and found no fire or other hazards.

2103 hrs – Automated iPhone crash notification. Firefighters responded to the reported location, located the iPhone in the roadway, and confirmed no vehicle crash had occurred.

2317 hrs – Smoke investigation. Firefighters investigated reports of smoke coming from a storm drain.

2356 hrs – Fireworks debris. Firefighters extinguished burning fireworks packaging in the roadway.

0005 hrs – Dumpster fire. Firefighters extinguished a dumpster fire determined to have been caused by the improper disposal of spent fireworks.

Although the holiday has ended, please continue to use caution when disposing of used fireworks. Spent fireworks should be thoroughly soaked with water and allowed to cool completely before being placed in a trash container to help prevent fires.

Thank you to our firefighters, dispatchers, law enforcement, EMS, and the citizens of our community for helping make this Independence Day a safe and successful holiday.

🇺🇸 Thank You, Sidney! 🎆

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Sidney Volunteer Fire Department’s Independence Day fireworks display. It was wonderful to see so many families and friends come together to celebrate our nation’s independence.

This event would not be possible without the dedication of our firefighters, who volunteered countless hours planning, preparing, conducting, and cleaning up after the display. Their commitment to our community is what makes this annual tradition a success.

A special thank you to CNN Electric for providing a truck and trailer to assist with transporting equipment and assisting with both the setup and teardown of the fireworks display. Your generosity and continued support of our department and community are truly appreciated.

With the changing weather conditions leading up to the event, our focus was on safely preparing for the show, so we unfortunately didn’t get any behind-the-scenes photos of the setup this year. We’re grateful we were able to provide another safe and enjoyable fireworks display for our community.

If you’re celebrating with fireworks today, please do so responsibly, be mindful of changing weather conditions, and always have a water source readily available. With the potential for thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, be prepared to adjust your plans if weather conditions change.

Public Fireworks Display Update

The fireworks display is set and ready for a 9:15 p.m. launch!

We appreciate everyone’s patience as we monitored this evening’s weather and worked closely with the National Weather Service to ensure conditions were suitable for a safe display.

We look forward to celebrating with everyone tonight. We hope you enjoy the show and have a safe and happy Independence Day!

Public Fireworks Display Update

As of this time, we are still planning to hold tonight’s public fireworks display as scheduled, with a start time of approximately 9:15 p.m.

We continue to closely monitor the potential for thunderstorms that could impact the timing of the display. Our team is working closely with the National Weather Service to monitor changing weather conditions and make informed decisions throughout the evening.

Our goal is to remain on schedule, and we will provide updates if weather conditions require any changes.
