The Sidney Police Department provides 24/7 law enforcement services for the residents and businesses of Sidney. We strive to maintain the safe and secure "small-town" atmosphere our citizens have come to love while providing professional policing. The Sidney Police Department is responsible for all law enforcement calls for service that occur inside the corporate City Limits of Sidney.

The Sidney Police Department has investigated the recent “crime spree” and reports that the incidents were found to be unrelated.

The individuals involved in the vandalism at Pitman's were identified as two juveniles who confessed with their parents present. Their case has been forwarded to the County Attorney for further action. Additionally, the two males identified in the video footage furnished by Little Tornado were identified and were found not to be involved with the white van or any other incidents.

However, the footage of the van captured by Little Tornado did provide a piece of evidence: a Colorado license plate. The plate could not be enhanced by local means and has been sent to offsite resources for enhancement to aid in further identification. The investigation into the white van remains open and is still being actively pursued through several different avenues.

We greatly appreciate the public's help. We would also like to remind the public that our page is not monitored. For any information you may have, it is best to contact us directly through our non-emergency line.

There is no indication that the juveniles involved in the Pitman's incident, or the individuals identified in the Little Tornado video, have anything to do with the vehicle break-ins located on 5th Avenue. We would like to take this time to remind citizens to please lock your doors and secure your vehicles.

As we head into Memorial Day weekend, the Sidney Police Department pauses to honor and remember the brave individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country and our communities.

To all who have served and are currently serving, and who have sacrificed, and the families who carry their legacy: We remember, and we thank you.

Have a safe and meaningful Memorial Day weekend, Sidney.

To: The Officers of the Sidney Police Department,

As we observe National Police Week, I wanted to take a moment to speak directly to the men and women who make the Sidney Police Department what it is.

Often, the public sees the uniform, the badge, and the patrol car. But I see the people behind them—the individuals who show up every single day with a commitment to this city that goes far beyond a job description.

The greatest asset of this police department isn’t our equipment or our technology; it is you. You are the heartbeat of our operations and the backbone of our community’s safety.

I am acutely aware that in today’s world, you have choices. Your skills, bravery, and dedication are in high demand, and you could choose to take them anywhere. The fact that you continue to choose this department and this city is something I never take for granted.

I see the sacrifices you make, many of which go unnoticed by the outside world:

The Long Days: Pushing through exhaustion on 15-18 hour days to ensure the job is done right.

The Heavy Call Load: Handling a relentless pace with professionalism and empathy, even when the pressure is high and you’re behind on reports.

The Extra Hours: Sacrificing time with you own families to help cover open extra shifts to protect the families of others.

What humbles me most is your attitude. Despite the weight of the badge and the difficulty of the shifts, you show up without complaint, ready to serve.

Thank you for your resilience. Thank you for your courage. It is the greatest honor of my career to work alongside you.

Chief Lovato

Today, the Sidney Police Department and multiple local agencies responded to a high-priority threat at the Walmart Supercenter in Sidney. At approximately 2:17 PM, a caller contacted the store claiming that incendiary devices had been placed throughout the building and that an individual armed with an AR-15 was on his way to the store.

Public safety was our immediate priority. The building was evacuated, and a comprehensive security sweep was conducted. We are grateful for the seamless coordination of the following responding agencies:

Sidney Police Department

Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office

Nebraska State Patrol (including the State Bomb Unit)

Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s Office

Sidney Fire Department

Sidney Regional Medical Center EMS

City of Sidney Electric & Streets Departments

Following a thorough investigation of the property, no incendiary devices or active threats were located. The call has been determined to be a "swatting" incident—a dangerous hoax intended to trigger a large-scale emergency response

Walmart has confirmed that this appears to be part of a nationwide series of similar hoax calls targeting multiple stores today. Our local investigation remains active as we work with state and federal partners to trace the source of the call.

The Sidney Walmart will remain closed for the remainder of today. It is scheduled to reopen tomorrow, April 30, at 6:00 AM for normal business hours.

To ensure the safety and comfort of our community, officers from the Sidney Police Department and deputies from the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office will be maintaining an increased patrol presence at the store throughout the coming days.

We thank the residents of Sidney and Cheyenne County for their cooperation and the various city departments for their logistical support during this incident.

Big Day for the Sidney Police Department! 🚔🎉
Today marks a major milestone for our agency and the community we serve. We are incredibly proud to announce that two of our own have officially graduated from the 222nd Basic Session of the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center!

Please join us in celebrating Officer Devin Holbrooks and Officer Faith Gettman on this tremendous achievement.

Both officers have put in months of grueling work and dedication to reach this point. During today’s ceremony, they participated in the official pinning, joining the ranks of certified law enforcement officers. We are also proud to share that our officers didn't just participate—they excelled:

Officer Devin Holbrooks served as a Team Leader for the session and was chosen as the Class Spokesman, leading the reading of names for his fellow graduates.

Officer Faith Gettman was honored as part of the Outstanding Team Award, recognizing her commitment to team work and collaboration.

A Special Recognition

We also want to extend a huge thank you to Lieutenant Ruiz. He served as a guest instructor at the academy, lending his expertise to ensure the success of not only our officers but recruits from across the entire state.

Devin and Faith, we are so proud of the hard work you’ve put in. We are excited to have you back home and look forward to the great things you will accomplish as you serve the citizens of Sidney!

On behalf of the Sidney Police Department, I want to sincerely thank you for sharing this. As Chief, it was incredibly moving to have several people forward this post to me today.

While I can’t speak for the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office, I can speak to the character of the first responders in our area. None of our officers do this job for a large paycheck or an easy schedule; they do it because they are deeply invested in our community. We have planted roots here, and we view everyone we serve as our neighbors.

We always strive to do the best we can with the resources we have. Despite my best efforts my officers take their work home with them, regardless if it’s a good or bad call , we learn from them, and constantly push to be better.

It may seem like a small gesture to some, but first responders rarely receive this kind of public feedback. To see you publicly credit my team for their kindness is deeply touching. I am immensely proud of the team we’ve built and the growth I see in them every day. Encouragement like this goes further than you know. Thank you for your kindness!
