Today, Sierra Madre Firefighter/Paramedics participated in a Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) training at the City Council Chamber, joined by Mayor Lowe, Council Member Parkhurst, Fire Chief Bartlett, and SMFD’s Medical Director Dr. Loza-Gomez.
POCUS is a portable ultrasound device that allows paramedics to assess patients in real time while in the field. It helps identify conditions such as breathing problems, allowing crews to make faster and more accurate treatment decisions before arriving at the hospital.
The Sierra Madre Fire Department has been selected as one of only two agencies in the States participating in a pilot study evaluating the use of portable ultrasound in the prehospital setting.
Respiratory distress calls are one of the most common medical emergencies in Sierra Madre. This technology will help paramedics quickly assess patients with breathing difficulties and determine the likely cause so they can provide the most appropriate treatment.
Through this pilot program and ongoing training, the Sierra Madre Fire Department continues working to better serve our residents by providing prompt and accurate medical care when it matters most.

This morning, the Sierra Madre Fire Department joined the Sierra Madre Fire Safe Council, CAL FIRE, and Los Angeles County Fire Department at the Eaton Fire Commemoration. We are grateful to everyone who attended, shared stories, and took time to reflect on the impact of the fire and the resilience shown by our residents and first responders.

Events like this remind us that wildfire preparedness starts at the neighborhood level. We’re proud to support the Fire Safe Council’s Block Captain Program, which helps keep streets informed, connected, and better prepared for emergencies.

If you’re interested in becoming a Block Captain and helping your neighbors stay safe, we encourage you to get involved. Together, we can continue building a stronger, more resilient Sierra Madre.
