Today, on National Purple Heart Day, we pause to honor the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who were wounded or made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedom.

Originally created by General George Washington in 1782 as the Badge of Military Merit, the Purple Heart is our nation's oldest military decoration. It is a medal no service member asks to receive, but one that carries the immense weight of selfless sacrifice.

To all the Purple Heart recipients we thank you for your courage and dedication.

Honoring a hero? If you have a friend, family member, or loved one who earned the Purple Heart, please leave their name, service branch, or story in the comments below so we can honor them together today.

We wanted to take a moment to honor Tony Becerra, a recreational therapist at our Yuma Veterans Home, for being given the Above and Beyond award at the Arizona Health Care Association (AHCA) annual convention for his heroic actions. Earlier this year, Tony helped save the life of a fellow staff member who experienced a major health episode by performing CPR until paramedics could arrive.

Tony exemplifies the core values our agency prides itself on: selflessness, care, and excellence. Congratulations Tony, and thank you for your dedication and support to this agency and to our Veterans!

On July 27, 1953, the Korean War ended with the signing of the Armistice agreement, signaling the end of three years of bloodshed. During war time, more than 35,000 U.S. service members lost their lives fighting against North Korea.

Today, we honor and remember those service members who never returned home. Thank you for your service and your sacrifices.
