ILLEGAL BURNING
As Spring and warmer weather has arrived, city officials notice the increase in illegal burning within the city limits.
According to city code, residents are allowed to burn leaves, twigs (not more than 2 inches in diameter) and vegetation originating on the property, so long as the wind is not blowing more than 10 miles per hour. Please check and make sure there isn’t a current burn ban in the city or county before
The burning of any other solid waste like mattresses, box springs, furniture and other similar items are not allowed and constitutes illegal burning, unless an approved incinerator is provided or a variance has been obtained from the appropriate air pollution control agency.
In addition, some neighborhoods also have restrictive covenants over open burning that doesn’t involve the city.
Illegal burning can result in a ticket leading to a court appearance and/or fine.
Anyone with questions about burning items in the city limits can contact the Sikeston Community Development Department at 573-475-3743.
