Eleven volunteers from Pinos Altos Volunteer Fire and Rescue responded to the fire in Silver City today.

While all of our equipment and most of our department’s firefighters stayed within our district to be ready for any possible incidents that cropped up tonight, a handful were able to help get a handle on the blaze in town.

We’ve allowed and even encouraged many area residents to bring brush thinned from their own private property to the pile next to our Cottage San Station. The pile now is large enough.

Please take brush removed from private property to the landfill or have it chipped on site. Do not bring any more material to this pile until our department has a chance to burn it as part of a training exercise.

With a classroom training going on this weekend, we won’t have enough remaining volunteers to conduct the burn safely. And with burn restrictions going into effect Monday, the window is closing. Thanks for not adding to this pile on Cottage San Road for the next few months.

A number of volunteers took the opportunity to train with live fire a couple weeks ago. They burned some brush piles on private property in our district. Getting involved with the fire department, the landowner had done some thinning work. attended a previous training burn, and participated in meetings in the months leading up to this.

The Pinos Altos Volunteer Fire and Rescue volunteers are scheduled to complete their annual refresher training for wildland firefighters this month.

Member Carol Gadda provided these photos from the training burn.
