Reading Is Fundamental joins millions around the world in mourning the loss of Dolly Parton, a beloved storyteller and extraordinary champion for children’s literacy. Through her lifelong commitment to putting books into the hands of children, Dolly helped inspire a love of reading for generations. Her remarkable legacy will live on in every child who discovers the joy and possibility found in a book.

Today we lost Dolly Parton — a voice that shaped American music for six decades, from "Jolene" and "I Will Always Love You" to "9 to 5.”

Dolly proved you could be a chart-topping legend, an Oscar-nominated actress, and a devoted advocate for children all at once.

New Mexico benefited tremendously from Dolly’s extraordinary generosity. In our state, her Imagination Library launched in 2010 with eight kids in Grant County. Today, nearly 2 million books have been distributed to New Mexico’s youngsters because one woman believed a book in the hands of a child could change everything.

Thank you, Dolly, for the stories, the music and for always believing in our kids. Your songs will live in our hearts forever, and countless New Mexico children will lead lives with greater imagination because of the books you gave them.

We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Dolly Parton, founder of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and beloved cultural icon. Dolly inspired generations with her music, one-of-a-kind personality, and limitless generosity.

We are privileged to be a part of her mission to get more books into the hands of more children through the Imagination Library of Louisville. We'll share ways you can honor her legacy and love for reading at a later time. For now, please keep Dolly's family in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this monumental loss.
