State Legislators Address Democratic Club

Our state legislative delegation spoke to the Club on May 9. Speakers were Senator Ben Kramer, and Delegates Charlotte Crutchfield, Bonnie Cullison and Vaughn Stewart.
Kramer started the presentation with praise for club members he met with who were lobbying for issues important to seniors. He praised the District 19 delegates, and how they work together to “get stuff done.” He told the audience that they will need to help get the message out that Larry Hogan is not the moderate as he is portrayed. He said that those that worked with him in Annapolis know that he is very conservative on many important issues.
Crutchfield pointed out that the legislature dealt with 2,700 pieced of legislation this session. Bills she worked on include the Freedom to Read Act, the Artificial Intelligence Governance Act, and bills on on-line data privacy and protecting election officials.
Cullison discussed multiple health related bills including reducing ER wait times, improving long term care staffing, notifying nursing home residents of a pending sale, regulating new alternatives to burial or cremation, and reducing the paperwork insurance companies require to reauthorize standing medications. She is still working on a bill regarding end of life options.
Stewart pointed out that Hogan left a lot of structural deficits in the general and transportation budgets, and that the budget deficit is affecting improvements to Norbeck Road.
Kramer returned to discuss several issues including fighting gift card scams. He also helped to secure the funding for a 14 passenger electric bus for Leisure World.

Maryland Comptroller Brooke Lierman addressed the May 11 meeting of the Democratic Club. Over one hundred people attended in person or via zoom.
Lierman serves as the elected CFO for the state, its revenue administrator, and on numerous boards and commissions. Since taking office she has worked on a new vision and goals for the agency focused on a more equitable and prosperous state, creating opportunities for families and businesses, and positioning the state for economic success.
Her accomplishments include hiring the agency’s first CIO, updating the website, and creating a report on the state of the economy to help policy makers when making decisions. She has also established the Office of Public Engagement with local offices to help Maryland residents. She is working on building resistance into the Comptroller’s systems, and making sure it can deal with issues brought on by climate change.
When asked about Maryland’s senior tax credit she said it will be continued in 2024. Asked about the Key Bridge collapse she said she is working with trucking companies to mitigate issues with the closure of the Port of Baltimore, and our federal delegation is working on federal assistance. Asked about the U.S. Senate race she emphasized to need to defeat Larry Hogan and keep the Senate in Democratic control.
