OFFICIAL WEATHER ADVISORY

Issue Date: Sunday, March 15, 2026
Subject: Major Multi-Hazard Storm System Targeting the Mid-Atlantic
SYNOPSIS

A powerful and intensifying "bomb cyclone" moving through the Great Lakes today is fueling a significant weather outbreak across the Eastern United States. While the northern tier of the system delivers blizzard conditions to the Midwest, the southern "warm sector" is primed for a Level 4 out of 5 severe weather outbreak as it shifts into our region.

PRIMARY THREATS & IMPACTS
Residents should prepare for a volatile 24-hour window where multiple atmospheric hazards will be in play:

๐ŸŒช๏ธ Tornadoes: Potential for multiple tornadoes, including the risk of long-track, intense cells.
๐Ÿ’จ Damaging Winds: Widespread straight-line wind gusts of 60 to 75 mph, capable of causing power outages and structural damage.
๐ŸงŠ Large Hail: Large-caliber hail (1โ€ to 2โ€+) likely with discrete cells.
โ„๏ธ Wintry Transition: As the cold front passes Monday night, rain is expected to change to accumulating snow for inland and mountain areas.

EXPECTED TIMELINE: MONDAY, MARCH 16
The severe threat will peak on Monday as the squall line marches from west to east:

SAFETY ACTIONS
Monitor Alerts: Ensure you have multiple ways to receive warnings (Weather Radio, Wireless Emergency Alerts).
Identify Shelter: Know your safe spotโ€”lowest floor, interior room, away from windows.
Secure Property: Bring in loose outdoor furniture and check backup power supplies today.
Detailed maps, radar animations, and localized impact zones are included in the Full Report linked below.

In Memoriam: Captain Carroll Greer Jr.

It is with heavy hearts and profound respect that we announce the passing of Captain Carroll Greer Jr., who answered his final alarm on February 26, 2026.

A dedicated public servant and a fixture of the Maryland and Federal firefighting communities, Captain Greerโ€™s career was defined by bravery, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to the safety of others. His distinguished service spanned several decades and multiple agencies, including:

Naval Service Weapons Fire Department

Walter Reed AMC Fire Department

Bethesda Naval Fire Department, where he retired with the rank of Captain.

In addition to his professional career, Captain Greer was a pillar of the volunteer service. He was a Life Member of the Mt. Rainier Volunteer Fire Department in Prince Georgeโ€™s County, Maryland, where he mentored generations of firefighters and served his local community with distinction.

A Legacy of Service
Captain Greer was known by his colleagues as a "firefighter's firefighter"โ€”a leader who led by example and a mentor who shared his vast knowledge with everyone he worked alongside. His loss will be felt deeply across the many stations he called home.

Remembering the Silver Spring Train Collision: 30 Years Later

February 16th marks the 30th anniversary of the tragic collision between a Maryland Area Regional Commuter (MARC) train and an Amtrak train in Silver Spring, Maryland. This disaster claimed 11 lives and injured more than two dozen passengers and crew members, remaining one of the most significant and harrowing responses in the history of Forest Glen Engine 754.

Shortly after 5:30 p.m. on a snowy and bitterly cold evening, the crew of Engine 754 was dispatched alongside other fire-rescue units from across the DMV for a train collision with reports of a massive fire.

Upon arrival, the Engine 754 crew faced treacherous conditions. Navigating the track bed in freezing temperatures, the crew worked past downed high-voltage wires and the wreckage of the Amtrak locomotive to reach the MARC passenger car, which was heavily involved in fire.

Today, we honor and remember the crew members, passengers, and families affected by this tragedy, as well as the brave first responders who answered the call.
