GLIMA TRAINING ON 9 SEPTEMBER FOR ACTIVE AND VETERAN MILITARY IN MARTINSBURG, WV

On 9 September 2023, we will offer world-class Glima (the Viking grappling system) training in Martinsburg, West Virginia! Training priority will be for active and veteran military with other slots to be opened later if those are not filled. This is one of our charitable programs for active and veteran military. A $20 donation is requested to hold your place.

Odin’s Warrior Tribe is partnering with the Icelandic Glima Federation (Glímusamband Íslands), Hurstwic, and Nine Realms MMA in Martinsburg, West Virginia to bring authentic Icelandic Glima to the US in September 2023. There will be an all-day hands-on training event on 9 September including a talk on the history/role of Glima “The Fighting Method of the Vikings.”
The Team from Iceland includes the current Glima King, champion and holder of the Grettir Belt (named in honor of Grettir Ásmundarson of Saga fame), Einar Eyþórsson, Jana Lind Ellertsdóttir, the former Glima Queen (female champion), and Guðmundur Stefán Gunnarsson the Vice President of the Glima Federation. From Hurstwic will be Dr. William Short and Reynir Oskarson, himself a Glima fighter, who are friends and Viking age experts and coauthors of in our opinion the best book on Viking Age combat.

Training starts at 9am (0900 hours) on 9 September and will end at 5pm (1700 hours). Arrive NLT 0830am. There will be water, coffee, a light lunch, and BBQ dinner at the end of training provided free of charge.

You need to be prepared for an all-day intensive training activity and will be required to sign a waiver. Long athletic pants, tee shirts, and tennis shoes required – though we will probably end up training bare foot.

The training priority is for active and veteran military and if those slots do not fill up, we will open it up to others interested with a suggested donation to our charity. These would be folks such as marital artists and Viking reenactors. If you want to be considered for a non-military slot and placed on a no obligation wait list if there are available spots, then send us an email at [email protected].

I know this isn’t the Maryland National Guard birthday but it’s part of our unit’s lineage. Happy Birthday to the PA National Guard

For more than 275 years, the sons and daughters of Pennsylvania have volunteered to serve the commonwealth and their country. In 1747, Ben Franklin’s Associators were the first to muster – as the precursor of the Pennsylvania National Guard. That tradition continued as brave individuals answered the call. They have had many names: militiamen, riflemen, doughboys, Soldiers, and more, but their duty to the community and the country has always stayed the same.

Happy Birthday to the Pennsylvania National Guard – and thank you to those individuals that have continued to support our commonwealth and country.
