FUNDING ALERT FOR LOBSTER INDUSTRY AND SCIENTISTS!

The Sea Grant American Lobster Initiative is pleased to announce funding for collaborative research projects that align with emerging lobster industry and management needs.

This call is for research conducted with and for the industry.

Projects must be developed and led by research teams that include at least one fishing industry representative, such as a commercial fisherman or a representative from a commercial fishing business, including cooperatives, dealers and processors.

It's an exciting opportunity to build industry-research-management partnerships to address ecological, regulatory, and socio-economic challenges in the American lobster fishery.

This new five-year cooperative institute will harness partnerships with NH Sea Grant, Florida Sea Grant, Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant, California Sea Grant, & University of Hawai'i Sea Grant College Program, among others, to advance American marine aquaculture.🦪🐟🌿

We have identified the University of New Hampshire as the host institution for the new NOAA Cooperative Institute Fostering Aquaculture Research and Markets. We will award $13,500,000 to the institute this year to advance U.S. marine aquaculture development. This is the largest single investment in aquaculture that NOAA has ever made.

The University of New Hampshire will be supported by academic, industry, and non-governmental organization partners. Researchers will investigate topics such as engineering and technology development, artificial intelligence for aquaculture, environmental observations and forecasting, marine aquaculture demonstration projects, risk management and vulnerability analysis, and seafood markets research.

The 2026 Sea Grant Knauss fellows have officially started their one-year fellowship!

The fellowship began this week with an orientation including conversations with NOAA and Sea Grant leadership, networking with NOAA staff and partners, professional development and several cohort-building exercises.

In 2020, recognizing a lack of information about greater amberjack, a commercially and recreationally important reef fish, Congress directed NOAA Fisheries Service and Sea Grant to investigate.

🎣 Now, the Greater Amberjack Count results are in!

This project revealed new biological and ecological findings about greater amberjack. Specifically, distribution and movement data suggest that U.S. South Atlantic, eastern Gulf of America, and western Gulf of America greater amberjack may be best managed as separate stocks. The Greater Amberjack Count also explored genetic structure, age and growth, and efficacy of new scientific tools like advanced acoustics and environmental DNA for stock assessments.

New York Sea Grant is accepting applications for a Great Lakes Tourism Specialist, who will be located at SUNY Oswego.

Applications are being accepted online through June 29th for this NYSG position associated with Cornell Cooperative Extension and Cornell University: https://bit.ly/gltourismspecialist.

The specialist hired will serve as a primary resource for Great Lakes coastal recreation and tourism organizations, businesses, and local, county and state agencies on tourism and economics.
