: Flash drought can develop quickly, sometimes transforming relatively normal conditions into significant drought in just a few weeks. That rapid development makes flash drought detection particularly challenging in the Southeastern United States, where frequent rainfall can be followed by short periods of intense heat and little precipitation. Researchers on the 2026 West Coast Ocean Acidification research cruise collect environmental DNA, or eDNA, to take a snapshot of species diversity in different ocean conditions. Every living organism sheds genetic material. By collecting this DNA in the water from their tissues, f***s and mucous (don't worry - it's tiny), we can assess where they occur in the ocean.

A great opportunity on missions like WCOA 2026 is collecting biological and chemical information at the same time. Since marine species have different tolerances to and other stressors, eDNA can help assess how these stressors may influence biological communities in the ocean.

How do we collect eDNA?
Water samples from a conductivity, temperature, and salinity (CTD) rosette are used to collect eDNA and then evaluated for species presence and diversity. This information is paired with high-quality measurements of ocean chemistry and other conditions like temperature to determine how the environment may affect the distribution of marine life and biological communities.

This hurricane season, a fleet of ten saildrones are heading into the western tropical-subtropical Atlantic, the waters around the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Caribbean Sea to do something that crewed vessels avoid: collect data from within hurricanes.

These uncrewed surface vehicles (USVs) will collect critical near-real-time ocean and atmospheric data from inside storms and transmit it directly to researchers and forecast centers.

Saildrone, Inc and NOAA partners will collect this important data with the goal of improving hurricane forecast accuracy.
