🐢💚 Happy World Sea Turtle Day! 💚🐢

Today we celebrate one of the ocean’s most ancient and incredible creatures—sea turtles, who have been swimming our oceans for more than 100 million years.

Sadly, all seven species of sea turtles face threats from plastic pollution, habitat loss, entanglement in fishing gear, and climate change. Every small action we take can help protect these remarkable animals and the marine ecosystems they call home.

She just stood there.

A wildlife observer traveling through a rapidly developing area of South Florida noticed a Florida panther standing completely still on a small patch of dry ground. At first, the animal looked as though it was watching something in the distance. But as the observer continued looking, it became clear that the panther wasn't hunting, resting, or preparing to move. She was simply standing there.

Behind her, a swamp stretched across part of the landscape. In front of her, a busy highway cut through the remaining habitat. To either side were cleared lots, construction sites, new roads, and expanding development. The observer could see bulldozer tracks, exposed soil, tree stumps, and scattered remnants of what had once been continuous forest. The panther stood in the middle of it all, surrounded by barriers in nearly every direction.

Florida panthers require large connected habitats to travel, hunt, find mates, and raise young. They often move across wide areas, following routes that may have been used for generations. In this photograph, however, the landscape appeared increasingly divided. Natural habitat remained, but only in isolated fragments separated by roads, development, and other obstacles.

What makes the image so powerful is its stillness. The panther wasn't running. She wasn't hiding. She wasn't reacting to any immediate threat. She simply stood there, looking out across a landscape that offered fewer options than it once did. The observer remained at a respectful distance and documented the moment without disturbing the animal.

Nothing dramatic happened afterward. Eventually the panther turned and disappeared into one of the remaining patches of habitat. Yet the photograph lingered in the observer's mind long after she was gone.

Sometimes wildlife photography captures action. Sometimes it captures survival. And sometimes it captures a single quiet moment that makes us stop and think about how much a landscape can change within a single lifetime.

Known for their strength, agility, and elusive nature, cougars play a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. As apex predators, they help keep wildlife populations in balance and contribute to the overall health of our natural landscapes.

The future of cougars depends on the future of their habitat. As development continues to fragment wild spaces, protecting and restoring connected habitats is more important than ever.

True conservation is not achieved through killing, but through responsible stewardship grounded in science. Research consistently shows that human-bear interactions decline by over 95 percent when human-related attractants, such as unsecured trash and food sources, are removed. If the goal is to protect both people and wildlife, the solution lies not in lethal control, but in education, prevention, and evidence-based management.

It hurts to lose even one. Vehicle collisions are the number one cause of Florida Panthers deaths. So sad.
