Earthquakes are not an uncommon occurrence in western Nevada. In December 1869, Eliza Buckland wrote about an earthquake that made her room “rock like a cradle” and nearly frightened her to death.

Fortunately, Monday’s 5.7 magnitude quake, centered near Silver Springs, did not cause any damage to historic Buckland Station. Thanks to everyone who has reached out to express concern.

The house is alive with the sound of music!

A few young visitors shared their gift of music with us today making the house feel less like a museum and more like a home – a place of familiarity, comfort, security, connection, and belonging.

The piano originally resided at Buckland Station with the Towle family from 1907-1917 and was donated to Nevada State Parks in 2017. We can only imagine the cherished memories the Towle family created around the piano and the joy and warmth it brought to their home.

Some things are better together – peanut butter and jelly, milk and cookies, Buckland Station and Fort Churchill.

When it comes to Buckland Station and Fort Churchill, you can’t really talk about one without talking about the other, since they led parallel histories and they both benefited from having the other as their closest neighbor.

In the winter, visitors can enjoy peekaboo views of Buckland Station from Fort Churchill and vice versa.

For Samuel and Eliza Buckland, the month of December was marked by a number of significant events.

December 6, 1860: Marriage of Eliza Prentice and Samuel Buckland.

December 1, 1861: Samuel appointed Lyon County Commissioner.

December 27, 1869: Eliza experienced and wrote about an earthquake that shook the house “like a cradle.” This was the Olinghouse earthquake. It was a 6.7 magnitude earthquake that originated northwest of Wadsworth, Nevada, and caused damage in the mining towns of Virginia City and Gold Hill.

December 1875 (date unknown): Death of infant (two-day-old) daughter, Eliza. Eliza was one of eight Buckland children. Sadly, only three survived into adulthood.

Early December 1883: Eliza cut her foot while washing her feet at Buckland Station. This cut led to her death a few weeks later on January 3, 1884.

December 28, 1884: Death of Samuel.

Imagine the interesting things the Buckland family saw from their porch in the 1870s when this highway was once a bustling wagon road.
