Two more days of Portland Rose Festival ship tours! USS CHAFEE (DDG 90) will be open for public tours Saturday & Sunday, June 6-7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. We hope to see you on the waterfront at Tom McCall Waterfront Park!
To ensure ship tour completion by 4 p.m., lines will be monitored for approximate entrance start time. All tours will be completed by 4 p.m., so the tour line may be cut earlier in the afternoon, depending on line waiting times. It is recommended that those interested in public ship tours arrive early.
When arriving for public tours, all visitors will be required to present a federally approved government-issued photo identification (see approved identification list below) and pass through an airport-style security screening checkpoint prior to boarding the ships. All visitors are subject to search prior to entering the security zone. Visitors are encouraged to bring as few items as possible when arriving for their tour, as there is no on-site storage. As a matter of public safety, flat-heeled, closed-toe shoes are required for tours aboard ships.
Approved forms of federally approved government-issued photo identification:
- Enhanced State ID
- U.S. Passport or Passport Card
- DOD ID (including IDs issued to dependents)
- Permanent Resident Card
- Border Crossing Card
- Photo ID issued by a Federally Recognized Tribal Nation/ Indian Tribe
- HSPD-12 PIV Cards
- Foreign Government-Issued Passport
- Canadian Provincial Driver’s License of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada Card
- Transportation worker identification credential
- U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
- U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential
- Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)
- DHS Trusted Traveler Cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
- Clear ID (NOT Clear Plus)
Prohibited items on board include the following:
- Weapons: including knives, fi****ms and club weapons
- Defensive chemicals or sprays: including mace and pepper spray; spray cans of any type
- Fireworks, flammable liquids or other explosives
- Drugs and drug-related paraphernalia illegal by federal standards, including cannabis
- Large bags, including backpacks, diaper bags and large camera bags (small camera bags and small handbags may be permitted, but are subject to search)
- Strollers (there is no secure holding area for any personal items)
- Glasses that are capable of taking pictures or video such as Meta Glasses
While general photography of this event is allowed, the use of drones in the area of Navy vessels is strictly prohibited. Videography while walking throughout the tour is also prohibited.
Due to the nature of U.S. Navy ships, those with limited mobility, or those who require walkers or wheelchairs, will not be allowed on ship tours for their safety. In these cases, the Navy will facilitate a pier-side brief.

Portland Rose Festival Fleet Week is in full swing! 🌹 Portland , the nation’s longest-running at 119 years, marks 80 years of U.S. Navy participation in the city’s annual Rose Festival. The event showcases maritime capabilities, and connects citizens with Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen. Visiting service members also enjoy the hospitality of , support various community service events, and participate in annual festivities across the city alongside the nation's 250th anniversary celebrations.

U.S. Navy ship to arrive in Portland for Rose Festival

Sailors assigned to U.S. Navy Guided-Missile Destroyer USS Chafee (DDG 90), is scheduled to arrive in Portland to participate in annual Portland Rose Festival Fleet Week activities, June 4-7. The ship will cruise along the Willamette River and moor between the Steel and Burnside Bridges by approximately 5 p.m.

USS CHAFEE (DDG 90), along with vessels from the U.S. Coast Guard Northwest, and the Royal Canadian Navy, will offer public tours while the ships’ crews participate in annual festivities across the city to include the Grand Floral Parade, Royal Rosarians Honorary Knighting Ceremony, and community service activities.

The U.S. Navy ship will be open for public tours on June 4-7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. To ensure ship tour completion by 4 p.m., lines will be monitored for approximate entrance start time. The Portland visit offers the public an opportunity to tour a U.S. Navy warship and meet with Sailors as they showcase their ships’ capabilities which ensure that the U.S. military remains the world’s most combat-credible fighting force capable of maintaining peace through strength. It also gives the public a chance to gain a better understanding of how sea services support national defense and freedom of the seas.

Recently, our 2025 Sailor of the Year, EM1 Mary Alvey, along with hard-charging service members assigned to commands throughout the Pacific Northwest, attended a Seattle Mariners' game during thier Salute to Armed Services Night. Alvey is the Administrative Office Lead Petty Officer at Transient Personnel Unit Puget Sound, and her win as the Navy Region Northwest Sailor of the Year highlights her status as a premier professional within the region. Her ability to thrive in roles outside her primary rating and her commitment to strengthening command climate make her an exemplary representative of the Navy's core values.
