* WHAT...Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.
* WHERE...SW Colorado
* WHEN...Through this evening.
* IMPACTS...Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Recent burn scars will also be especially susceptible and these include the Lee and Elk RX, Gold Mountain and Elk, Ferris, and Babylon burn scars to name a few.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- Monsoonal moisture will remain across the area today and will
support thunderstorms and showers with heavy rainfall across the watch area. Several rounds of heavier rain are expected
increasing the chance for flash flooding especially in our more
susceptible areas.

*Ophir Pass to temporarily close weekdays
Ophir Pass Road will be closed on weekdays beginning Monday, August 24 from 8am to 5pm continuing through Friday, September 7. The pass will remain open daily from 5pm to 8am and all day on weekends during this period. The temporary closure is necessary to help ensure public safety during hazardous-materials removal and construction work at the abandoned New Dominion Mine.

US 550 Red Mountain Wall & Tunnel
Project Update-Week of August 17

Work Update:
At the wall, crews will continue soil nail drilling. Soil nails are steel rods used to reinforce the existing retaining wall.
At the Bear Creek Tunnel, drain cleaning will be underway on Monday and possibly Tuesday.

Traffic, Trail and Backcountry Impacts this week:
At the retaining wall (MP 88.68)-Motorists will encounter 24/7, single-lane, alternating traffic guided by temporary traffic signals at the retaining wall.
At the Bear Creek Tunnel (MP 90.84)-Alternating traffic with short delays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday and possibly Tuesday, if needed.
Climbers wishing to access the trail near the retaining wall at MP 88.6 need to park south of the work zone at the pull-off near the snowshed. Use caution when walking on the highway between the pull-off and the trail.
Motorists should plan for 15 to 20 minute delays
An 11-foot width restriction is in place (tunnel clearance is 13 ft. 9 in.)
Access to trailheads and scenic overlooks will remain open
Backcountry 4x4 travelers driving on the Alpine Loop from Lake City to Ouray should be aware of the US 550 traffic impacts and delays
With heightened fire activity occurring in the area, the project team is well prepared to adjust road construction to accommodate emergency traffic and evacuation routes.

Repairs to teh Bear Creek Tunnel at Mile Point 90.84 and retaining wall at MP 88.68 are underway. Project Schedule
Work is expected to be completed by late September
Normal working hours will be Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Weekend and night work are possible, but will be announced ahead of time

About the Project

A retaining wall at Mile Point 88.6, four miles south of Ouray, supports the roadway and will be repaired and reinforced. Stabilization anchors will be drilled into the retaining wall, and the cinder block wall surface will be repaired and receive upgrades.

The Bear Creek Tunnel, located at MP 90.8, two miles south of Ouray, will receive needed maintenance and repairs inside the tunnel. Drainages will be cleaned and cleared, the internal tunnel walls will be repaired for cracks.
