Thursday, Friday and Saturday three board members and our fire chief attended the annual Oregon Fire District Directors Association (OFDDA) annual conference in Seaside, Oregon.

Attendees attended a multitude of breakout sessions to learn about updates on Ethics law, Budget Law, as well as other personal/professional growth trainings.

In the picture, our own Board President Angie Frye is giving an update on the Fire Service Alliance Committee’s work that she is a representative of on her work as a board member of OFDDA during the annual OFDDA business meeting.

The Alliance Committee is a strategic partnership between the Special District’s Association of Oregon, Oregon Fire Chief’s Association and OFDDA to create a unified voice for the Oregon Fire Service when it comes to legislation and other important topics that may affect the Oregon Fire Service.

Preparatory burns will be conducted today in the Stayton, Drakes Crossing, and Silverton Fire Districts from 12 pm – 2 pm.

The Field Burning season is nearing an end for 2025. We will not finish burning all registered acres today, but are getting close. This means you will still see some plumes in the Silverton Hills, but we will be posting here before those occur on the day. The Field Burning season runs from after the 4th of July through the end of September. Some years have weather conditions and field conditions that add more challenges and extend the season, while some years allow for more to be accomplished on fewer days. Thank you all for your understanding while we continue to work with the program’s registered growers, the Oregon Department of Forestry’s meteorologists, the Department of Environmental Quality, and local Fire Districts to finish our season safely!

Preparatory or “prep” burning will begin today at 1:00pm for registered growers in the Marion 1, Sublimity, Stayton and Drakes Crossing Fire Districts with a possibility of moving to open burning.

Did you know that Oregon Department of Forestry meteorologists provide a weather forecast for the Silverton Hills during field burning season? Twice a day from July through September an email forecast goes out to all subscribers of the Silverton Hills Field Burning Forecast. This forecast is used by ODA, ODF, and grass seed growers to determine if conditions are favorable for field burning. Subscribe at https://oda.fyi/FieldBurningForecast

🔔 Update: as of 10:30am, we've had a weather update so we will be changing the timing of prep burning today to be from 1-3 pm (reflected in the post above, now; originally it said "2:00pm" for start time). We may also go to open burning.
🔔 Update: as of 2:00pm, moving to test fires.
🔔 Update: as of 2:45pm, moving to open burning.

Prep burning will occur in the Lyons, Scio, Silverton, and Stayton Fire districts this afternoon, starting at 12 pm. Field burning may follow, depending on the weather conditions.

Field burning is limited to certain grass seed species – these include fine fescues, creeping fescues, and bentgrass. These seed kinds benefit from field burning after harvest which can increase yields and stand life and also control pests and diseases. Each year, Smoke Management program staff collect samples from a random subset of registered fields and send these samples to the Oregon State University Seed Lab (https://seedlab.oregonstate.edu/) for testing.

Seeing smoke in the Silverton, Sublimity, Lyons, or Stayton areas today?

Don’t be alarmed – prep fires are being lit to prepare fields for open burning. There is potential for open burning to follow if conditions allow. Field burning is an essential agricultural practice that helps producers of some seed crops increase yields and protect their crops from pests and diseases. These burns are highly controlled and only allowed under permit from the ODA.

Over the last few weeks you have probably noticed some activity around the station. Yesterday that work started to take shape in earnest.

Over the last several years we began to start busting at the seams with storage around our facility. We have grown tired of having things stacked and stuffed in every corner, nook and cranny.

We set out a couple of years ago to put some money away each year to be able to build a new storage building with out asking our patrons for any additional money.

We are excited to see it begin to come to fruition and are looking forward to being able to stretch out our legs and have some elbow room again!

07/25/2025

We will be doing prep burns starting at 12:30pm in the Silverton, Sublimity, and Stayton Fire Districts -- with the possibility of moving to open burning.

Confused about burning regulations in Oregon? Want to know if and when backyard or agricultural burning is permitted? The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has created an interactive mapping tool that shows statewide burning restrictions based on the type of burning and your location in Oregon. Preparatory or “prep” burning began today at 12 pm for registered growers in the Marion #1, Stayton, Scio, and Silverton Fire Districts. Open burning may follow if conditions allow.

Field burning can improve seed yields, stand life, and help control pests and diseases of grass seed. Beginning after the Fourth of July each year, the field burning season runs through the end of September. ODA and other state agencies work closely with Oregon seed growers to safely burn fields and protect public health through smoke management of this economically essential agricultural practice.
