JOINT TRAINING ANNOUNCEMENT

On Wednesday, August 5th, Silverton Police, Silverton Fire District, Metcom 911, Woodburn Ambulance, Legacy Health - Silverton Hospital, along with several local law enforcement, EMS, and fire agencies, will be conducting a multi-agency training exercise.

Please note the following impacts:

Training activities will take place between approximately 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM at the Old Silverton City Hall, Silverton Hospital, and Silverton Middle School.

Members of the public may see participants with realistic mock injuries being transported between the training locations.

There will be a significant presence of emergency vehicles in these areas during the exercise, including a Life Flight helicopter landing at Silverton Middle School.

This is only a drill. There is no emergency.

These types of exercises help our first responders and community partners stay prepared and improve coordination during a large-scale emergency. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we train to better serve our community!

Pool Closure Update:
Out of an abundance of caution, the City/YMCA Pool will be closed for the remainder of today.

This afternoon, several pool patrons reported noticing an unusual odor and feeling unwell. As a precaution, some individuals chose to seek medical evaluation.

City staff immediately conducted water quality testing, and all results were within normal operating standards.

All other YMCA programs and activities at the Lewis Street facility will continue as scheduled.

We are aware that PulsePoint displayed this incident as a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI). This was the result of an incorrect incident classification. Dispatch assigned the incident as a Multiple Patient Scene (MPS), which is the appropriate designation for an event involving less than ten patients and can be managed with available emergency resources.

The City will continue to monitor conditions and will provide updates if any new information becomes available. At this time, we anticipate reopening the pool during normal operating hours tomorrow.

If you or someone in your household may need additional time to evacuate—including older adults, people with disabilities or access and functional needs, families with young children, those who rely on medical equipment, or anyone with pets or livestock—consider taking action one evacuation level earlier.

🟢 Level 1 – Be Ready: If your household may need extra time to evacuate, consider preparing as though you're already at Level 2.
🟡 Level 2 – Be Set: If you need additional time because of disabilities, access and functional needs, medical needs, children, pets, or livestock, consider leaving now rather than waiting for Level 3.
🔴 Level 3 – Go Now: Leave immediately. Do not delay.

Planning ahead can help you travel more safely, avoid traffic, and reduce stress during an evacuation.

🚨 Community Notice: Training Exercise Happening Tonight 🚨

Tonight, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., the Silverton Fire District, in partnership with the Silverton Police Department, Woodburn Ambulance, and METCOM 911, will be conducting a mass casualty incident training exercise at the former City Hall, located at 306 S. Water Street in Silverton.

During the exercise, residents can expect to see a large number of emergency vehicles and first responders in the area. There will also be volunteer role players acting as patients with realistic simulated injuries as part of the training. These role players are students from the Silverton High School Protective Services Program, whose participation provides invaluable realism and hands-on learning opportunities for everyone involved.

Please do not be alarmed. This is only a planned training exercise, and there is no emergency or threat to the community.

Training exercises like this provide an invaluable opportunity for our agencies to strengthen communication, coordination, and response capabilities during complex emergencies. We are also grateful to the students from the Silverton High School Protective Services Program for helping make this training as realistic and effective as possible.

This morning, Firefighter Kyle Miller and Firefighter Diego Flores deployed on Tender 419 to assist with the East Evans Creek Road Fire in Jackson County.

The fire is currently estimated at approximately 7,850 acres and is 5% contained. They will be joining firefighters from across Oregon in supporting suppression efforts and protecting property and natural resources.

Please join us in wishing Firefighter Miller and Firefighter Flores a safe, successful deployment.

As we prepare to celebrate our nation's independence, let's also honor our shared responsibility to protect our families, neighbors, and community. By taking a few simple safety precautions, we can all enjoy a safe and memorable Fourth of July.

Before You Light Fireworks
• Light fireworks from a paved surface, such as a driveway or parking area, whenever possible. Avoid using fireworks in dry grass or fields.
• Keep a charged garden hose or a bucket of water within reach.
• Have a fire extinguisher available if possible.
• Keep spectators, children, and pets at a safe distance.
• Light one firework at a time, and never attempt to relight a "dud."
• Use only Oregon-legal consumer fireworks.

When You're Finished
• Place all spent fireworks—and any "duds"—into a bucket of water and let them soak overnight before disposing of them in the trash.
• Never place used fireworks directly into a garbage can while they are still hot.
• Before calling it a night, take a few minutes to check your driveway, yard, landscaping, roof, and gutters for smoldering debris or small spot fires.

A safe celebration doesn't end when the last firework goes off. Taking a few extra minutes to ensure everything is completely extinguished can help prevent a fire long after the celebration has ended.

If a fire starts and you cannot safely extinguish it, leave the area immediately and call 9-1-1.
