PUBLIC SAFETY NOTICE – EXTREME COLD WEATHER
The Silvis Police Department and Silvis Fire Department want to alert the public that dangerously cold weather is expected this weekend in the Silvis area. Forecasts indicate frigid temperatures with highs near or below single digits and dangerously low wind chills, potentially below -20°F, with bitter conditions continuing through Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Extremely cold wind chills can cause frostbite on exposed skin in minutes and increase the risk of hypothermia.
How to Stay Safe in Extreme Cold:
❄️ Dress in layers, wear a hat, gloves, and a scarf to protect your face and extremities.
❄️ Limit time spent outdoors; seek shelter quickly if you become cold.
❄️ Keep pets indoors and bring outdoor pets into warm spaces. ❄️ If traveling, carry a winter emergency kit (blankets, water, snacks, phone charger).
❄️ Protect water pipes by letting faucets drip and insulating them. ❄️ Check on elderly or vulnerable neighbors and family members. ❄️ Use portable heaters safely—keep them away from flammable materials; never use grills or generators indoors.
