Imagine all the barriers in place to keep a person in ICE detention. It’s much worse now, but in 2019, it took many of us and Nuhu’s own resilience and courage to free him. And it required him to speak English.

I can’t imagine my own father, a naturalized citizen who didn’t speak English, making it out of ICE detention. The Latino community is overrepresented in ICE detention, and there are also many Indian and Chinese detainees. There are both men and women in Adelanto. It’s not hard to think about all the ways that age, gender, and language can isolate and reduce someone’s chances of making it out.

There are tens of thousands of people in ICE detention with no advocates, no support. Even those who have signed their deportation orders (often under duress and unjustly) continue to be caged. The cruelty and the moneymaking appear to be the point. These private facilities are getting $150-$250 per night per kidnapped prisoner.

In the visitors’ waiting rooms and in detention at Adelanto, I’ve met constituents of Norma Torres, Ted Lieu, Luz Rivas, Brad Sherman, George Whitesides, Maxine Waters, and none of these congresspeople have conducted the oversight visits that they have the power to, to support the kidnapped Americans they represent. For now, this work is left up to the community, and I hope you can join me in that and in motivating our representatives to free our neighbors.

For every death that we hear about, there are thousands that languish without a voice. Help me change that.

Does precinct-level household income explain the differences in voter turnout?

This isn’t a perfect way to separate the effects of income and %Latino on voter turnout, because they’re highly related anyway. But when you remove income’s linear effect from both turnout and %Latino, what’s left over still correlates at −0.50.

These are neighborhood-level patterns. Not claims about individuals.

Was the spatial pattern of my vote share actually unusual?

I got 13.2K votes compared to Jake Levine’s 31.7K votes.

The final FEC reports were due last week on July 15th.

With the $3.3M behind him, Jake had $104 backing each vote he got, compared to my $3 per vote.

(I ended up spending $39K.)

A consultant with 25 years in the party machine mocked me for “targeting the lowest-opportunity voters” with a skywriting plane.

Precinct-level vote results are in! I did best in areas with the highest Hispanic voter percentages, which were also areas with the lowest voter turnout. These are the same areas we skywrote over.

In the end, I placed fourth, with the highest votes per dollar of any of the Democratic candidates in my race. I’m so proud of what we’ve built and energized by the community support and appetite for data transparency and truly progressive and ethical representation. And I did it without paying for a single digital ad.

Okome is my underdone soggy bottom 🥐

LAPD needs to be held accountable for murdering the Canoga Park Labradoodle, especially as a response to a wellness check. There’s a level of dehumanization of the pet owner, whether it’s by ICE or by the LAPD, in treating a person’s pet… their family member, their whole world… as a threat to be neutralized.

In what neighborhoods would this be unthinkable? If we can picture where it wouldn’t happen, then we already understand the problem.
