On May 30, 1984, President Reagan officially recognized World War II veteran William J. Crawford during the U.S. Air Force Academy graduation. William J. Crawford’s Medal of Honor had been authorized in 1944 for brave action in taking out enemy positions outside Altavilla, Italy. Shortly after the engagement, he was taken as a prisoner of war, never having attended a formal ceremony for his medal. This ceremony, 40 years later, provided the formal presidential presentation of the medal to William J. Crawford.

On this day in 1982, President Reagan announced the creation of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Centennial Commission. The Commission set out with an ambitious goal: to restore both Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty in time for the 100th anniversary celebration. The effort culminated in Liberty Weekend celebrations held from July 3-6, 1986.
