Last night, Simpsonville City Council advanced a resolution to fund the state required study on development impact fees on a 5–1 vote.
Impact fees are long overdue in Simpsonville. Growth is happening, now and in the future, and the question is whether existing taxpayers should continue carrying the full cost of that growth, or whether new development should contribute its fair share.
Impact fees are not a tax on residents. They are fees paid by new development to help cover the increased demand placed on our roads, public safety, parks, and other infrastructure. In short: growth should pay for growth, not the people who already live here.
Before any city in South Carolina can adopt impact fees, a professional study is required by law. That study is what we voted to move forward. The estimated cost is around $50,000, and our administration will refine that number in the coming weeks.
I know some oppose impact fees because they oppose growth itself. But cities don’t stay frozen in time they either grow or decline. The responsible path is managed growth, where infrastructure keeps pace instead of falling behind.
Funding this study is the first step.
Impact fees, if adopted, are about planning responsibly and protecting Simpsonville’s future.
The final vote will take place at our next business meeting.
