Once again, the Berks County District Attorney's office is warning the public of ongoing scams involving callers impersonating Deputy Sheriffs and Police Officers (using the names of actual officers), telling victims that they missed jury duty or failed to appear for court. Please share this information with relatives who may be vulnerable to these schemes.
Scammers are pressuring the victims into sending a payment electronically, such as Bitcoin or cryptocurrency. Berks County law enforcement will NEVER call to demand money or payment over the phone. If you receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately and never give out any personal or financial information.

Electric scooters have become a popular way to get around, but their legal status in Pennsylvania can be confusing. Here’s a breakdown of the current status of Pennsylvania law regarding electric scooters and electric bikes.
Pennsylvania law is quite strict when it comes to electric scooters on public roads. The state considers them vehicles Title 18, §102 Definitions (motor-driven cycle), meaning they are not exempt from titling and registration requirements as set forth by PennDOT and would be required to pass equipment standards and inspection requirements. However, most electric scooters don’t have the necessary equipment (like turn signals and mirrors) to meet these registration and inspection requirements. Electric scooters, like electric skateboards and electric unicycles, cannot be legally operated on public roadways. Electric scooters can only be operated on private property.
Pennsylvania law also prohibits electric scooters on sidewalks. Title 18, § 3703.
In Pennsylvania, an electric bike (e-bike) is considered a “pedacycle with electric assist”, provided it meets certain criteria: The electric motor must be under 750 watts, it can reach a maximum speed of 20 mph on a level surface when powered solely by the motor, the e-bike must weigh no more than 100 lbs., and the e-bike must have operable pedals. Additionally, the operator of the e-bike must be 16 years of age or older.

It’s important to be aware that rules and regulations regarding electric scooters and electric bikes can change. Keep yourself up to date through these sources:

Attention Lower Heidelberg residents:

Due to the current snow storm, a snow emergency remains in effect until tomorrow 1/20/25 at 8:00 AM. Please remove any vehicles parked on the snow emergency routes so public works crews can remove the snow.

Please remove your vehicle from the roadway if you live on an emergency route in the Township. We DO NOT want to have to issue you a ticket for $75. Please save yourself the money and put your car in a driveway or another location so that our public works can properly clear the roads.

Thank you!

The Wilson School District has partnered with BusPatrol and local law enforcement to prioritize student safety! All district buses are now equipped with advanced safety technology, including photo enforcement cameras, to deter illegal passing of stopped school buses. This initiative aligns with PA Motor Vehicle Code § 3345.1 and aims to reduce dangerous motorist behavior, ensuring a safer ride for all student riders.

Did you know? According to the NASDPTS, school buses are illegally passed over 45.2 million times each year across the U.S. Let's work together to lower this number and protect our students!

This new program will launch on Monday, January 6, 2025. To learn more about this program and how you can help keep our roads safe visit: https://tinyurl.com/wsdbuspatrol
