National Poppy Day in the USA is held annually on the Friday before Memorial Day (May 22, 2026) to honor fallen military service members. Americans wear red poppies to symbolize sacrifice, a tradition originating from WWI and promoted by The American Legion to support veterans and their families.

When: The Friday before Memorial Day, often known as National Poppy Day, this year May 22,2026.

Symbolism: The red poppy represents the sacrifices of veterans who served and died for the country, inspired by the poem “In Flanders Fields”.

Purpose: The American Legion Family distributes these poppies, often handmade by veterans, to raise donations for current medical and financial needs of veterans, active-duty military, and their families.

Origin: While worn on November 11th in the UK and Commonwealth nations, in the US, the tradition is strongly linked to Memorial Day weekend to honor those who died in service.

History: American teacher Moina Michael initiated the idea of wearing poppies for remembrance, and it became the official flower of The American Legion in 1920.
