Peirce Mansion

Peirce Mansion The historic Peirce Mansion is open to the public for quarterly open house events and is available to rent for private events.

John Peirce's elegant home located at 2901 Jackson Street has been a part of Sioux City's history for over 120 years! Completed in 1893, the Victorian-era home is constructed with South Dakota quartzite making it a unique example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. After being purchased by the Junior League of Sioux City for $10,000 in 1958, the mansion was donated to the City of Sioux City

for use as a cultural building. The mansion served as the site of the Sioux City Public Museum from 1961 to 2011 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the Peirce Mansion provides a one-of-a-kind venue for weddings, receptions, graduations, corporate gatherings, family reunions, private parties or photo shoots!

A notice of the proposed property tax levy is now available on the City of Sioux City website at sioux-city.org/fiscalmanagement.

A public hearing regarding proposed changes to the property tax levy will take place on Monday, March 24, 2025 at 3:30 p.m. in City Hall Council Chambers (405 6th Street).

Iowa Code Section 24.2A requires taxing entities to publish a notice detailing the proposed city, county, and school property tax rates and revenues for the budget year. This notice must be mailed to each taxpayer by March 15. It's important to note that this is not a property tax bill.

As a result of Senate File 2442, the assessed valuation in the examples now reflects growth between the current and budget years. Both residential and commercial examples show a 10% increase in assessed value from the current year to the budget year. Additionally, SF2442 increased the assessed value of the commercial example from $100,000 to $300,000. These changes aim to make the example more realistic, as most properties experience value growth in assessment years.

The proposed property tax levy represents a "not-to-exceed" amount. Throughout the budget meetings, the amount for the City of Sioux City has decreased significantly.

On this day in Sioux City history: Prominent local developer John Peirce and his family left Sioux City for Seattle, WA on February 12, 1901. Financial struggles forced Peirce to hold a lottery for ownership of his prized mansion at 2901 Jackson Street. Fortunately, more than 120 years after his departure, the architectural gem he built and that now bears his name, the Peirce Mansion, continues to be treasured by the community. His feelings about his turn of fortunes are documented in his bittersweet “Farewell to Sioux City” message available at SiouxCityMuseum.org/history-website/peirce-john
