Did you know that rabbits and jackrabbits are not the same thing? In fact, they are quite different. For example, rabbits are smaller animals that like to burrow, while jackrabbits are larger, solitary, and open-habitat animals. Their ears are also different. Jackrabbits have very long ears that aid them in regulating their body temperature in hot environments. In terms of activity, rabbits are more active during early morning and late evening and jackrabbits are often more active at night. In Iowa, our native species are the Eastern cottontail rabbit and the white-tailed jackrabbit. Fun fact: jackrabbits are not true rabbits; they are hares instead!
