Dolly Parton was known around the world for her music, but her work helping children learn to read has also made a major impact, including right here in Siouxland. Find more below:

There are few people in this world who have touched as many lives as Dolly Parton.

Through her music, her generosity and her unmistakable spirit, Dolly has brought joy to generations. But one of the legacies closest to her heart began with something very personal: her father's inability to read and write.

Dolly created the Imagination Library in his honor, with a simple dream of helping children develop a love of books and reading from their earliest years. What began in her hometown has grown into a worldwide program reaching millions of children.

A Special Piece of Dolly's Legacy in Siouxland
When United Way of Siouxland brought the Imagination Library to our community in 2020, Dolly gave us an autographed copy of The Little Engine That Could. It still has a special place in our office today.
There's a reason that book means so much.

The Little Engine That Could is the very first book every child receives when they enroll in Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. And in many ways, its message reflects Dolly herself. She came from humble beginnings, dreamed big and built an extraordinary life while never forgetting where she came from.

Through the story of a little engine that refuses to give up, Dolly wanted children to learn an important lesson early in life:
Believe in yourself. Keep trying. You can overcome life's challenges.

Since 2020, more than 11,600 Siouxland children have graduated from the Imagination Library, each receiving books addressed especially to them and delivered right to their mailbox.

That's a lot of little engines learning to say, "I think I can."

And we think that's a pretty wonderful legacy.

Our community signed on to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library over 25 years ago to give our children the best start in life. Inspired by Dolly Parton’s own dad, who couldn’t read or write.

While our hearts are incredibly sad today, we’re more inspired than ever to continue this important mission. Together, we are building a brighter future for our children.

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our Leadership Awards Lunch on August 18 at South Sioux City Marriott Riverfront!

All companies that increased their overall campaign by 10% or more were recognized during the event. In addition, five businesses received awards for their efforts during the campaign.
