🚨 MINNEHAHA COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE: URGENT SCAM ALERT 🚨

We are warning residents about a growing “Courier Cash” scam targeting seniors and community members across the area.

Scammers are calling victims, pressuring them to withdraw large amounts of cash, lie to bank staff, and overnight the money to an address provided by the criminals. Once shipped, the cash is gone.

Please protect yourself and loved ones:
• Hang up immediately if anyone tells you to move or withdraw money.
• Be honest with your bank—tellers are trained to spot fraud and protect you.
• Never ship cash. No legitimate agency or business will ever ask you to do this.

These criminals often target older adults, but anyone can be affected. Please share this post to help keep our community safe. Stay vigilant and look out for one another

School Zones Are Busy Again! Let’s Keep Our Students Safe.
With the 2026 school year underway in all five Minnehaha County School Districts, our Deputies have increased patrols in school zones during morning drop-off and afternoon pickup. Your cooperation helps keep these areas safe for everyone.
• Slow Down: Reduced speeds save lives.
• Stay Focused: Phones away—eyes on the road.
• Watch for Students: More walkers and bicyclists are out and about.
Together, we can make this school year safe, smooth, and positive for all our students. Thank you for doing your part!

It is with great sadness that we share the news of Corporal Kevin Keegan’s passing. He passed away unexpectedly on Monday evening at the hospital due to a sudden medical event. Kevin dedicated over 19 years of service to the Sheriff’s Office within the Jail, and his commitment, professionalism, and presence will be deeply missed. Please keep Kevin’s family, friends, and colleagues in your thoughts during this difficult time.

Another reminder that the Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office - including our jail division - does not ask for payment of any sort over the phone or email. Especially payment in the form of electronic payments or gift cards.

The example below is the most recent situation we have learned of where a fraudster is attempting to request money with false claims of getting someone out of jail and into a pretrial diversion program. This is not how the program works.

Please call:
- Sheriff's Office (605-367-4300) if you ever have questions about a fine, ticket, or warrant
- Jail Division (605-367-4321) if you have questions regarding a person in custody or bond conditions

The Blue Envelope Program in Minnehaha County will provide law enforcement with additional information when they interact with someone with special needs. This is not a “get out of jail free” card; however, this type of program creates trust and minimizes misunderstandings.

The Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office was honored to participate in the South Dakota Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics last week. ⭐️

Sgt. Bullis and Sgt. Dubbe were among a dedicated group of officers from agencies across the state who traveled through various communities, helping spread awareness of inclusion, courage, and community support.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run represents the “Flame of Hope,” symbolizing respect for the athletes, officers, and everyone who supports inclusion, determination, and perseverance. It serves as a reminder of what strong communities are truly about.

We are proud to support Special Olympics and the incredible athletes who inspire us all every day. 🔥
