Split Rock Volunteer Fire Department

10/13/2026

Thank you to Dakota News Now for getting our story out there. We are hopeful to make waves and spread awareness of funding shortfalls that many volunteer fire departments around the state are facing due to rising costs and dwindling volunteerism.

As they prepare to retire the current rescue truck after many years of service, the department is asking the community for support.

Thank you for your service, dedication, and passion Deputy Frank. Thank you for working closely with not only Minnehaha County as a whole, but with the residents of the Split Rock Township as well.

PRESS RELEASE

On Monday, September 14, 2026, at approximately 7:46am, Split Rock Fire was dispatched to the 26400 Block of Bruns Place for an odor investigation.

The reporting party stated lightning hit their home and they could smell smoke. Split Rock Fire responded to the scene and found no smoke or flames showing. Command sent units to the roof division and attic division to investigate while other members deployed a fire suppression line in case of fire. Units in the attic found smoke conditions and Brandon Fire Department was requested as mutual aid.

Further investigation from the attic division units found an approximate 2'x2' area of charred sheathing and truss members. Units in the attic deployed a water can on hot spots. Crews on the roof division also found exterior charring and a hole through the roof likely caused by lightning. Units on scene then completed ventilation and the scene was cleared.

Split Rock Fire responded with 3 apparatus, 1 support vehicle, and 8 personnel.
