Severe storms with an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) are expected this afternoon through tonight. Main threats include wind gusts of 75+ mph, large hail (2+ inches), and EF2+ tornadoes.

To prepare for a tornado, check the forecast regularly, create a family plan with an emergency meeting place, and identify a nearby safe building if you live in a mobile home or without a basement. Pick a safe room in your home, such as a basement, storm cellar, or an interior room on the lowest floor with no windows. Practice your plan regularly, ensuring everyone knows what to do during a tornado warning. Don’t forget pets if time allows.

Emergency Management has opened and cleared out the tornado shelters in the housing areas in preparation for tonight’s weather.

🚨 Community Safety Notice 🚨

There are participants out on BIA Route 700 today taking part in a community challenge. Runners will be traveling approximately 7 miles along the route and may be present on or near the roadway.

Motorists are asked to slow down, stay alert, and be aware of their surroundings while traveling through the area. Please use extra caution and give participants plenty of space as they complete the challenge.

United States Attorney Ron Parsons announced today that U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann has sentenced a man from Agency Village, South Dakota, convicted of Distribution of a Controlled Substance Resulting in Death. The sentencing took place June 1, 2026.

Summary & Forecast Confidence:
Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop over the next few hours. The primary threats is hail up to golf ball sized and damaging wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph. We cant rule out a tornado or two. Areas that are flood prone, or have received recent heavy rainfall could experience flooding as well.

Forecast confidence for the severe hail and wind is moderate. The greatest uncertainty lies in the exact locations of storm development and how storms will evolve through the afternoon/evening.

Timing:
Thunderstorm development is ongoing at current. Storms will exit into western MN early late tonight into Friday morning.

Impacts:
Storms this afternoon and evening have the potential to produce large hail and high winds. We cant rule out a tornado or two

Today we got to join in on the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, which was originally started in 1988. We were honored to be apart of it. Thank you to the Roberts County Sheriff's Office and the Sisseton City Police Department who participated as well as the family members of these amazing young adults. Good luck to all those participating this weekend in Spearfish. We are all rooting for you.

What's Changed Since the Last Email?
The Red Flag Warning was expanded to include the rest of eastern SD.

Summary & Forecast Confidence:
Northwest winds behind a cold front that moved through last night will gust up to 30 to 45 miles per hour late this morning and through the afternoon. Dry conditions will continue this afternoon, with minimum humidity in the 20 to 30 percent range for much of the area. Some isolated areas may see humidity as low as 15 percent. The strong winds and dry conditions will combine to create critical fire weather conditions over the eastern half of SD and into west-central MN.

Timing:
The strongest wind gusts (up to 40-45 miles per hour) will be this afternoon. Driest conditions are expected during the afternoon, which when combined with the winds, creates the greatest concern for critical fire weather conditions. Winds will decrease and humidity will increase early this evening.

Impacts:
Any fires that ignite will spread quickly and become difficult to control or suppress. Winds of this strength can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Summary & Forecast Confidence:
South winds on the increase for Monday ahead of a cold front that comes through overnight. Ahead of the front, hot dry air moves across the region. Fairly confident in Red Flag conditions for south central South Dakota, though humidity will be a tad higher across parts of central/north central South Dakota.
Even with the front through, temperatures stay mild for Tuesday with continued low humidity and gusty northwest winds so fire weather concerns linger. Any fires ongoing will also experience erratic behavior as the front shifts the winds.

Timing:
Strongest winds and lowest humidity Monday afternoon. Winds stay up overnight, increasing again Tuesday morning before weakening in the afternoon/evening. Tuesday afternoon humidity also remains low.

Impacts:
Any fires that ignite will spread quickly and become difficult to control or suppress due to strong winds and wind shifts.
