August visitors started out with FSPSL Board Members touring the lodge on August 1st and then holding the meeting in Sisters. We really appreciate this folks and their dedication to the project.

The month ended with a special visit from the Carlson family on August 29th. They are so kind in giving us one of their historic pictures from when the Carlsons managed the lodge in the 50s. Betty Carlson has a special birthday coming up and she asked her family if they could come visit the lodge and see the progress. Thank you for the beautiful picture and the visit!

WEEK 12 (August 20-25)
We were fortunate enough to have the scaffolding a few more days and boy did we accomplish a lot, with one on the ground and one up high on the scaffolding. The west gable was the only gable without shakes. In the past years we have had to do the work on high ladders, which takes up far more time and is really hard on the body. We have used a lift on the west side to work on the 35ft high chimney, but this scaffolding was perfect with 3 sections wide and 5 levels high for installing the shakes (A lot of custom cuts) and painting them to match the trim and other gables.

The crew from Scaffolding Erectors, out of Portland, returned to take down the huge structure. It is quite a job, especially when you have to walk so far to the flat bed truck to load it up. I know now why they wear helmets. Just working on the ground cleaning up its hard not to keep hitting your head on the cross bars. Ouch! Don’t worry we have helmets…..

WEEK 12 (August 19 & 21)
Deschutes Concrete Coating from Bend returned this week to do a different finish on the restroom floors. We would have liked just to have polished concrete like the original but it was necessary to hide the patchwork in the concrete from removing the old plumbing and installing the new, to level out the floor and remove the blotchy red paint. First, we thought we just have a solid color but it was not quite right, and too shiny. So, we had them do the layered chip finish and the results are much better. This tan/gray/brown chip is a better look it blends the multi colored stones of the walls, and is much less shiny. They did a great job of prepping and the end results are much better. The rest of the ground floor will have the concrete grind, sand and polished. No blotchy red paint.

WEEK 12 (August 17-22)
This week was the last week for D & R Masonry Restoration's work at the lodge. Juan Alvarez and Gonzalo Acosta (Jr) worked at the lodge on the west chimney, west and south walls. They accomplished so much in 7 weeks. They were unfortunate enough to be up here for the fires north east of Sisters and all the smoke, but for the most part the lodge did not have but maybe one week of smoke and it was workable. We’re sure they won’t miss the drive over every Monday morning from Portland and staying in a hotel during the week away from their families, but we know they will miss working at the lodge in the woods and the easygoing peacefulness. They did such a great job we will be shocked if we still have leaks but time will tell.

WEEK 11 (August 10-15)

Very busy week. The Masons have completed the West Chimney and foundation and worked all week on the south front wall and three windowsill repairs. It has been quite a challenge getting all the different mortar color application to be somewhat the same and find all the leaks. Time will tell. Next week they plan to finish up and say goodbye.

The masonry work was funded by the generosity of Oregon Parks and Recreation Preserving Oregon Grant, Dann & Susan Boeschen, The Kinsman Foundation, and Trust Management Services. We are so thankful for their tremendous support throughout the project.

Removing all 75 windows in the lodge was our first project we did in 2018 before our first official work season in 2019. This work season work has begun on reinstalling the 2‘ x 2‘ window jambs and sashes of the ground floor. All the jambs have had to be rebuilt or repaired. We are finding out nothing is consistent when it comes to these 21 lower window jams in the stone foundation walls which slows the process way down. Upstairs on the main level the large windows will have to be installed after the paneling goes up. That will not happen until next year.

WEEK 10 (August 2-8)

This week was very smoky all week. Juan and Junior finished repairing of the west ground floor doors where they were made into doors from windows many years ago. The area around the doors leaked terribly so this was very needed. They finished the mortar application on the entire west chimney and foundation. The stone will be cleaned and ready for pictures next week. They also started to rebuild the 2 broken exterior window sills in front and 1 in back east cove. The southwest front wall is ready for mortar application next week.

The sill-plates for the restroom stall walls and doors jams were installed in preparation for the flooring application. The doors and side upper walls of the stalls will be the original wood paneling which was taken down a couple years ago. The lower walls of the stalls will be tiles. The original wood paneling will be brush cleaned and reinstalled.

WEEK 9 (July 27-31)

We were fortunate not to have a lot of smoke up here at the lodge this week. This week John with Ridgeline Electrical continued working on the electrical wiring and installation of the light fixtures in the lounge area (the old dorm areas), restrooms, hallways and utility room.

The masons, Juan and Junior with D & R Masonry Restoration, worked on the large west chimney applying the mortar and prepping the south front wall for mortar next week. The westside of the building gets extremely hot in the afternoons so they start very early to beat the heat!

We continue working on the restrooms in preparation for the floors getting concrete coating applied next week. We installed one the windows figuring out the easiest method for installing all 25 lower level 2’ square windows. Work on the narrow shelf above the sinks was worked on in preparation for the concrete top attached to the half wall supporting the two sinks. The stone walls in the restrooms were cleaned as well.
