Shortly after midnight this morning, Cloverdale Fire was dispatched to reports of a chicken coop on fire with flames spreading to nearby trees.

Crews arrived to find multiple outbuildings involved, along with several large trees burning. Thanks to a rapid response from Cloverdale and Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District crews, the fire was quickly contained to a small area and did not extend to the nearby home.

No injuries were reported.

This incident is a good reminder to regularly check heating elements in outbuildings such as coops, sheds, and shops. Ensure heaters are properly installed, clear of combustibles, and in good working condition—especially during overnight hours when issues may go unnoticed.

If you have questions about fire safety around your property, feel free to reach out.

Cloverdale Fire Levy on May 19, 2026 Ballot

The Cloverdale Rural Fire Protection District Board has approved placing a local option levy on the May 19, 2026 ballot.

WHY NOW
Since the last levy was approved in 2022, the district has experienced a 44% increase in emergency calls. In addition, wildfire activity in Central Oregon has increased in intensity and complexity, and the district is seeing higher demand for year-round preparedness, staffing, and operational support. Daytime response coverage can also be impacted when student firefighters and volunteers are unavailable.

PROPOSED LEVY DETAILS
Proposed rate: $1.23 per $1,000 of assessed value (TAV)
Current levy: $0.69 per $1,000 (would be replaced if approved)
Net increase: $0.46 per $1,000 of TAV
Estimated impact: approximately $149.50 per year (~$12.46/month) for a home with an assessed value of $325,000

IF APPROVED, LEVY FUNDING WOULD BE USED TO
* Maintain current staffing, including two Captains and three student firefighters
* Support 24-hour paid coverage for fire, EMS, and rescue response
* Add a Community Wildfire Risk Reduction Specialist/Firefighter, focused on reducing fire risk across the district’s service area
* Fill a vacant Captain position, allowing the Training Officer to focus full-time on training and crew readiness
* Maintain equipment, apparatus, and operational readiness for emergency response

IF THE LEVY IS NOT APPROVED
The district would continue under the current levy until it expires on June 30, 2027. At that time, funding for certain staffing positions would be reduced, and 24-hour paid coverage would no longer be maintained.

Ballots will be mailed to voters ahead of the May election.
