Sitka National Historical Park

Sitka National Historical Park Sitka National Historical Park, Alaska's oldest federally designated park, was established as a federal park in 1890. http://www.nps.gov/sitk/
(330)

It became a national monument in 1910 to commemorate the 1804 Battle of Sitka fought between the Tlingits and the Russians. All that remains of this last major conflict between Europeans and natives of the Northwest Coast is a clearing at the site of a Kiks.ádi Fort, located in the heart of this scenic 113-acre park, which features the Totem Trail.

Summer is a beautiful time to explore the trails of Sitka National Historical Park — and it’s also an active time for brown bears. 🐻
Bears frequently use the park’s trail system and access Indian River to eat salmon. Help keep both people and bears safe by staying alert and giving wildlife plenty of space.
Before you head out:
• Make noise while hiking
• Keep children close
• Keep pets on leash
• Never approach or feed bears
• Carry bear spray and know how to use it
• If you see a bear, stay calm, back away slowly, and give it room to move on
We all share these lands. Thank you for helping protect yourself, other visitors, and the bears that frequent parklands.

Looking to enjoy our winter wonderland with a casual nature walk? Tomorrow, Sunday December 14th at 10am, we will be hosting a morning bird walk led by local naturalist Connor Goff. This bird walk will serve as a warm-up before the annual Christmas Bird Count.

The event will include a stroll in the park and an opportunity to learn about identifying birds. The walk will begin at the seaside facing porch of Sitka NHP’s visitor center. Binoculars and warm beverages will be provided. There is no fee or registration necessary for this event. Duration is expected to last an hour but could run longer depending on weather and what birds are discovered.

The Audubon Christmas Bird Count is an annual event that engages people from across the country to help survey bird populations. Counts take place in 15-mile diameter circles, where volunteers follow specified routes and count every bird they see or hear. The 2024 Christmas Bird Count revealed a total of 124,732 birds counted across the nation. On Sunday December 14th at 10am, Sitka National Historical Park will be hosting a morning bird walk led by local naturalist Connor Goff. This bird walk will serve as a warm-up for the annual national initiative, the Christmas Bird Count, which kicks off nationally on December 14th.

The event will include a stroll in the park and an opportunity to learn about identifying birds. Skills and information shared can then be used to help identify birds for the duration of the Christmas Bird Count, which lasts until January 5th.

The walk will begin at the seaside facing porch of Sitka NHP’s visitor center. Binoculars will be available for participants to borrow, and warm beverages will be provided. There is no fee or registration necessary for this event. Duration is expected to last an hour but could run longer depending on weather and what birds are discovered.
