The Sixes Fire Board meets at the main Highway 101 station on the second Monday of every month at 7:00 PM. Sixes RFPD is a strictly volunteer department and we are always accepting new members! There are a multitude of aspects and talents that make up the heart and soul of our organization! Along with those who fight fire, we also need support crew for outside the structures to pull hose, organize tanks, move ladders, or run communications. Other positions include drivers for Engines and Tenders, technology support, extraction crew, medical support, mechanics for apparatus maintenance, engineers to supply water to fire crews, logistics etc. The possibilities are endless. Being on a fire department is unlike any other experience, and is a great and very rewarding way to give back to your community! Fire season starts Monday! Remember for this weekend: just because you CAN burn doesnt mean you SHOULD. Stay safe everyone!

Fire season will go into effect in Oregon Department of Forestry's Coos Forest Protective Association (Coos FPA) District Monday, June 1. Here's what you should know. Outdoor debris burning will be prohibited and other public restrictions like campfires, off-road driving, small equipment use (mowing dry grass and chainsaw use) will go into effect. Congratulations are in order to Firefighter Roos on being promoted to Lieutenant! Roos joined Sixes Fire in 2017 at the prompting of Chief Moore to "come on down and train with us" and he's been hooked ever since. He was a firefighter for CFPA (Coos Forest Protective Association) for nine years, finishing his career there as an accomplished Forest Officer.

Lieutenant Roos has been an incredible asset to Sixes Fire; bringing his years of experience in the wildland world, his passion and willingness to learn new things, as well as his natural ability to teach and lead others.

Along with his substantial credentials and qualifications in wildland firefighting, he is also a well rounded structural firefighter, a vehicle extrication technician, an EMR, and a driver/engineer. He was also one of the first volunteers when the search and rescue SCARR Unit was founded in 2023, serving as a rope rescue technician, a wilderness first aid provider, a rescue boat captain, and a wilderness search and rescue specialist.

Always the first to volunteer or help in any way he can, Lieutenant Roos is a decorated and accomplished firefighter, community asset, and friend. In his own words, his favorite thing about Sixes Fire is "the camaraderie of my fellow firefighters on the department and lifelong friends I've made while we serve our community together." Well said, Lieutenant, and congratulations on a well deserved promotion.

Seven members of your local SCARR Team just completed a 50 hour, 5 day Rope Rescue Technician course this past week! Instructors were Travis and Rich: 15 year veterans in the field who traveled from Glide, Oregon and Montana to bring this class to our Coast. In addition to the SCARR team members, Myrtle Point and CFPA also had firefighters in attendance.

Huge shout out to Chief W***y Burris of Myrtle Point Fire Department who allowed us use of the burn tower as well as their fire station for the first two days. We appreciate Myrtle Points support so much and look forward to continuing to train with you!

The next three days took place right in our backyard: Cape Blanco State Park! We utilized the low and high angle slopes of the land to fulfill the training requirements to complete the course. Haul systems, proper anchoring, knots, weight loads, patient packaging and more were all incorporated into this class. Art Tarin, the lead rope technician for Curry SAR and Cal-Ore Life Flight Rems unit also helped at the Cape for a few days, teaching us some invaluable skills and giving insight to specifics for our coastal region.

This class was a ton of fun and the team learned an incredible amount in just five days. None of it would have been possible without the financial support of our local community donors! A tremendous thanks goes to Coos-Curry Electric Cooperative, Inc. as well as our local Port Orford Senior and Activity Center for their generous contributions to this project. The Jeff Common Foundation also supplied a grant to Sixes Fire to help support this class and the students taking it.

Lastly (but certainly not least) we must thank the community members who participated in our "Fill the Truck" event last year. Without the equipment that was purchased during that fundraiser, none of this would have been possible.

All of these wonderful neighbors and community organizations coming together, as well as our volunteers who took a whole week off work and away from their families to participate, is what makes the Southern Oregon Coast truly special. All these hands together have made huge strides in this endeavor to make our home safer for all.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Thank you South Coast Head Start for inviting us back for some fire safety! We learned all about getting low in smoke, not to play with lighters, firefighters are friends, and of course, how to take the hose off the engine and put it back properly. After some rigorous testing, we are proud to report that we inducted about a dozen honorary Jr Firefighters! We can't wait to see you all again 🧡

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who helped make this year’s Easter Celebration such a wonderful success. What a beautiful day it was, and we are so grateful to have shared it with our amazing community!

A special thank you to the Port Orford Senior Center and ESA for helping sponsor this year’s egg hunt, the Wiener Family for generously allowing us the use of their field, and the Sixes Grange for welcoming us into their kitchen and dance hall for our firefighter pancake breakfast.

Congratulations to Ciaran Fraser, the winner of this year’s Duck Derby!

To everyone who came out to celebrate with us—thank you. Your support truly makes all the difference, and we hope you had as much fun as we did.
