Let’s recap the Municipality of Skagway’s (MOS) recent town hall:

The lack of education to inform voters is alarming. Ballots have already been cast during early voting and the town hall was held a mere eleven days before election day. MOS is attempting to have a simulation study completed to test the feasibility of their proposed plan, yet that simulation will be conducted ON ELECTION DAY. MOS has already ordered a floating dock and is nearing 60% project design and for the first time, at the recent Town Hall, MOS finally presented some financial information for its Ore Dock replacement plan. The city’s revenue projections are based on the Broadway Dock and the Ore Dock combined. This type of analysis does not lend itself to viewing the financial feasibility of the Ore Dock development by itself. The cost of the contamination remediation and who will be the responsible party is glaringly vacant from the analysis.

The real takeaway message from the MOS recent Town Hall was a hostage taking ultimatum. The manager and the mayor made their position very clear: unless you vote YES, they will hold all port development work, including the 2023 cruise ship protection plan, as a hostage.

“I cannot support a Bond without knowing all the construction costs, operating costs, revenue sources, impacts on current Industrial port users, Bond interest rate, and terms. As there has been no specific loan repayment information shared or details provided, I feel there is a lack of understanding, research, and competence among the MOS management and port development members. The potential for a last-minute financing decision due to lack of knowledge and foresight jeopardizes the future of the entire community. This proposition is plagued with financing ambiguity and a demonstrated lack of transparency and accountability.

The KPPF plan only replaces current infrastructure & does not adequately address or solve the concern of the industrial port users.”

“By voting NO on this ballot proposition, you are telling the municipality that you do not agree with the projected plan of spending the $65,000,000.00 bond. A NO vote is not saying that our ports do not need this investment, rather that we can spend a comparable amount of resources on an alternative plan that will ALSO save our upcoming cruise seasons and be profitable for the municipality in the long run.”
